The first Village Post Office (VPO) in Illinois recently opened in Washington Park, a suburb of St. Louis, IL. It’s the first in the St. Louis metropolitan area and the nation’s 160th VPO.
According to Washington Park Mayor James Jones, the VPO — part of the Community Thrift Store — is important for the community. “Traveling even a few miles can be difficult for residents who don’t have a means of transportation,” said Jones.
Community Thrift Store Manager Diane Rucker says the VPO is an extension of her business. “We’re about community outreach,” she said. “We want to build the community and help it in any way we can.”
In addition to selling second-hand clothing and merchandise — and providing free food to area residents in need — Rucker’s store now sells Forever stamps, Priority Mail Flat Rate shipping and offers Post Office Box service for its customers’ convenience.
