May 21, 2014 – The House Oversight and Government Reform Committee members passed the latest postal bill offered by Chairman Darrell Issa (R-CA), which would end “door delivery” for 15 million postal customers. The vote, which passed along party lines 18-13, occurred less than 48 hours after it was introduced.
“There is no justification for the dramatic cuts in service proposed in this legislation,” said APWU President Mark Dimondstein. “The solution to the manufactured USPS financial crisis is for Congress to eliminate the unreasonable financial mandate it imposed on the Postal Service in 2006 and which sent the agency into a tailspin.
“Privatizers in Congress are using the crisis they created to justify dismantling a national treasure,” Dimondstein said. “They must be stopped.”
The proposal to end door delivery is just the latest in a series of measures Rep. Issa has submitted that would severely curtail service. His other proposals have would eliminate Saturday delivery, shutter post offices, contract out retail services, and close mail processing plants, the union president noted. Consideration of a more sweeping Issa bill just two weeks ago was postponed after he failed to win support for it in the committee.
“Rep. Issa has not been able to garner support for his extreme and anti-worker postal bill, H.R. 2748 or other postal bills,” said APWU Legislative and Political Director John Marcotte. “Now, Issa is at it again!”
“Today’s bill represents a new strategy,” Dimondstein said. “Issa has now decided to eat the USPS one bite at a time.”
Postal unions are united in opposition to the bill. “We stand in solidarity against any efforts to privatize the Postal Service, diminish service to our customers, or weaken workers’ rights,” Dimondstein said.

Same reason Dianne Feinstein in the Senate with her husband,Dick Blum can rake in hundreds of millions of dollars in profits off the sale of Postal Service buildings, ethics are no longer enforced unless the public and the news media raises a stink. It is all about making money off their offices for most of the politicos in both houses, which is why legislation doesn’t get passed anymore.
CAN SOMEONE PLEASE EXPLAIN TO ME WHY IS MR ISSA ALLOWED TO BE ON THE POSTAL REGULATORY COMMISSION WHEN HIS TOP 2 CONTRIBUTORS ARE UPS AND FEDEX. ISN’T THIS A CONFLICT OF INTEREST. WHY HAS NO ONE EVER BROUGHT THIS ISSUE UP. THIS POLITICIAN SHOULD NOT HAVE ANY SAYING ON POSTAL ISSUES.
Issa who is already worth more than $400 million, will make a financial killing if UPS can deliver first class mail and gets the profitable part of its business.
issa is a former criminal who is hell-bent on destroying the usps. why is he doing this?
Any one that thinks any of theses draconian measures will result in lower postage rates is very naive. And the no door delivery will include taking the mail boxes from the curb and forcing every one to use a cluster box or a P.O box or maybe a UPS store mail box.The only ones that will profit from the dismantling of the USPS will be the politicians who are in bed with FEDEX and UPS.
This goes through and the 5 day goes through plus cutting back hours PO are open and closing more plants? The Great Postal
WALKING ROUTES DO NOT MAKE GOOD BUSINESS CURBSIDE CANT BE DONE IN OVER HALF THE TIME
Go slow= more dough
Well, we can all complain to our hearts content, but who put Issa in the House anyway? Voters, that’s who. Stupid or rich jerks who either bought the guns n’ prolife spiel the GOP is delighted to pad their pockets from, not to mention LGBT marriage, of whom is ultimately nobody else’s damn business, even though those elected officials really couldn’t give a rat’s a.. less. They know they can attract votes with fanning the flames of hate, intolerance and other dimwit issues and they’re right.
I personally don’t mind making routes mounted if it stops there, but once the ball gets rolling, you know what happens. Give a man like Darryl Issa an inch and he’ll steal 10 miles with Donohoe.
there will be no loss of bussiness..what crap u hand out
my route already got a cluster box notice but i will encourage them to put it curbside
Assa could care less about the wild fires and the constituents, the voters there have low standards for their reps.Getting a bill passed that sets the Postal Service up for privatization is more important.
We all know something has to be done to stop
the bleeding and it should begin with Issa
and his constituents alleviating the 5.5 Bil
the Post office is mandated to pay yearly for
“future” retiree health benefits. Regardless
of the fact Donahoe has negated to pay it over
the last few years in order to meet salary it
remains on the books as owed. Seeing that Issa
views this as another cash cow for the government
to deciphor from, it’s highly unlikely it will
go away completely. So, here we are down to
cluster boxes making a huge difference…really?
What positives they construed in financial terms
will be no match for the negative connotations
of the services customer base causing a further
decrease in letter mail and an increased conversion
of electronic banking through internet and smarphones.
Issa also wants customers to pay a fee if they desire
to have their mail delivered to the door to increase
revenue. I also can’t imagine these cluster boxes not
being an easy target to the crime intended perpetrators
who are undoubtedly licking their chops to see this
come to fruition. The shockwave of this for the P.O
will be loss of business that consumes any savings
benefit that was contrived by Mr.Issa but then again
maybe this was his plan all along!
Why can’t WE the Postal workers stop this guy..Mr Issa has his FULL long term HEALTH and RETIREMENT package in hand.. Why can’t WE the PEOPLE vote his ASS OUT of office???? The only way this guy can continue is if WE the PEOPLE let him.. Let’s start a Nationwide political activity to OUST this A-HOLE..
He’s used our tax money for HIS benefit.. Let’s throw him out on his ass… VOTE AGAINST HIM on the next election.. He’s just ANTI-AMERICAN for the common core workers… Roger
who cares, all this talk, nothing ever happens,2 years from now we will still be delivering all mail on saturdays, lets keep 6 day mail,i like the ot,no saturday no chance for ot on your day off.
well what able all the 80 plus folks who have figured out how to get the mail and already have their box at the street…dumb ass…they will figure it out…if they r that bad they can get the mail at a retirement center who already have cluster boxes inside..get over your self
I can’t wait to see how many dog bite incidents go away…and for the”security”of the mail everyone is so frantic about? Don’t worry, you’ll get the same coupon and cable offer tomorrow!!!!
Dems want to cut a deal. Rep Lynch wants to stop prefunding and have overpayment given back to USPS and then have a retirement incentive (early out) when asked if he would support the bill if this were included, he responded it would in all likelyhood pass.
When your 80 year old mother needs to walk to a clusterbox mailbox in freezing temps or very hot weather….thank your rethuglican’t congressperson.
the curbside folks dont even know some get this special service..now close on saturday..then u can lower the postage costs and move on
this is way over due..i hope it start asap…no one should have this service
If unions are against it, it must be a good bill.
Dream on~~ ending door delivery is a smart move where it can be done. The provision for handicapped to be exempt should remain ~~~ letter from doctor and changes if health improves, death, handicapped person moves, healthy person moves in.
About time, something is moving along. When no one actually pays for delivery, ( besides postage) why should some get better service than others? Not that I think cluster boxes are a good idea either. Everyone should have a box at the end of there driveway on the street. As for Saturday delivery, get rid of it, except the parcels.
It’s BS. Issa doesn’t care about the people. I’ve watched many of the Postal reform meetings. These guys are so out of touch with reality. It’s amazing. Cummins is another blowhard.
I wish Issa and politicians in general would put this much energy and time in fixing America. Of all the damn things this country faces. Issa focuses on privatizing us and hurting the middle class. Where’s your federal bill on helping your constituents in CA that lost their homes in the wildfires or CA having the worst drought in over 100 years!!! Remember this brothers and sisters!! Democrats don’t want to privatize us and America, REPUBLICANS do!!!!! Slice your throats and keep voting for them. Wake the F CK UP!!!!
