Farmer Jason Canjar gets his mail at his Madison Township dairy farm. Butch Comegys / Staff Photographer
Mr. Canjar, 39, quit his job last summer as a U.S. Postal Service mail handler to become a dairy farmer.
“Everybody thought I was nuts,” Mr. Canjar said as he paused near a manure-storage tank on his 200-acre farm near the Elmhurst Reservoir. “Some people said I wouldn’t make it six months.”
More than nine months after he inherited the dairy farm operated for decades by George Yedinak, Mr. Canjar seems pleased with the career switch.
“I’m busy 16 to 20 hours a day,” he said, as he entered a barn where he milks 48 Holsteins daily at 4 a.m. and 4 p.m. “It’s not a job. It’s a passion.”
Mr. Canjar resigned from his postal job after 14 years and committed full time to his rural passion.
“The day I quit was one of the happiest days of my life,” he said. “I love farming. It’s just so peaceful.”
Man quits postal job to milk cows
right on CJ!
C.J. Wayda,
What a great post! 🙂
Hey EAS and proud, stop being a coward and put your name, title and office. But then again, that’s what’s proud about EAS, lying, cheating and stealing while hiding behind some so-called managers skirt. Disclaimer: this does not apply to the qualified ,competent managers who do exist!! say your name, title and place of employment if your “proud to be EAS!”
Huh, what a switch, most mail handlers milk the Post Office!
I hear the unions up there stink worse than a ol pile of manure!
He switched from ‘milking the clock’ to milking cows!!
I wish you all the best, Jason! And in response to Joe Forlifta’s question, no the cows do not give him as much sh… as his stupid visors still give to the employees in the Scranton, Pa. haven of corruption and incompetence!!! Jason, if you need some strange animals for a sideshow, you know we could get you some from Scranton, but unfortunately they’re not of the quality of a Yeti or a Sasquatch. Good luck and good farming!!!
Your good workers would leave
I don’t blame them. Post office don’t want them anymore and they treat people like their slave machines with cheap labor. Eventually Post Office is going to screw themselves with cheap labor and get what you pay for!!!! Remember that big leagues! All their workers will leave and find better jobs!
good for you. i hope you will keep enjoying your new life. i always wanted to be a mailman when i was a kid when i got hired as an lsm operater and saw how they treated carriers i was glad i didn’t get my dream job. good luck and god bless you.
you have a better future with the cows then you would with the post office. when you it 50 they want you gone! loyalty to the worker is gone!!
i wish i had the option its a no brainer way to go you have a life again!
He has milked his USPS job long enough. Time to go!
wise choice
Jason, Good Luck!! You probably made the best decision in your life….the postal service probably won’t be around to make your 30 years anyway! Your office probably would have been shut down anyway….the way the PMG is operating!!
Good for you Mr.Canjar! I bet you have normal blood pressure readings as well…congratulations 🙂
i’m jealous
think the cows give him as much sh.. as his stupid visors used to??
