California: USPS offers reward after collection mailbox explodes at Marin post office

mailbox2014The U.S. Postal Service is offering a reward of up to $10,000 for information in an explosion at the post office in Woodacre.

The incident occurred at about 3 a.m. Sunday, when residents reported numerous explosions near the post office on Sir Geronimo Valley Drive. Authorities determined that someone set off explosives in a blue mail colllection box outside the post office, blowing out the bottom, said Jeff Fitch, a postal inspector.

Mail was found scattered in the area, some of it damaged. The postal agency was able to deliver the damaged mail.

The postal service and the Marin County Sheriff’s Office are investigating the explosion. The reward money is for information leading to the arrest and conviction of a suspect.

The potential penalty is up to three years in custody.

“This is a serious crime,” Fitch said.

Anyone with information can call the postal service’s 24-hour tip line at 877-876-2455.
