APWU: Reps. Cummings, Lynch Are Latest to Request Moratorium on USPS Service Cuts

cummings11/12/2014 – Rep. Elijah E. Cummings (D-MD) and Rep. Stephen Lynch (D-MA) are the latest in a long list of members of Congress calling for a moratorium on reductions in postal service standards and the closure of mail processing plants. The congressmen urged leaders of the House Appropriators Committee to include language in a 2015 funding bill that would prevent the Postal Service from proceeding with cutbacks that are scheduled to take place beginning on Jan. 5, 2015.

“Critical questions about the impact of these proposed consolidations and service delivery changes remain unanswered,” Cummings and Lynch wrote in a letter dated Nov. 12.  “For example, it is unclear how the proposed consolidations and service delivery changes would impact the Postal Service workforce, rural areas, small businesses, or senior citizens.“

A report by the #USPS Office of Inspector General found that the Postal Service failed to conduct impact studies for the proposed consolidations and failed to inform stakeholders about anticipated service changes. Both steps are required by the 2006 Postal Accountability and Enhancement Act before the Postal Service can enact the proposed service changes.

A report by the Postal Regulatory Commission also found that savings from the proposed cutbacks would be lower than Postal Service projections.

Service standards were reduced in July 2012, and more than 140 mail processing facilities were consolidated the following.

In August, 50 senators sent a letter to the Senate Appropriations Committee calling for a one-year moratorium. The following month, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) added his high-profile support. Also in September, a bipartisan group of 160 House members made a similar request to House appropriators.

“Support for our cause is growing,” said APWU President Mark Dimondstein. “There is bipartisan support in Congress for a moratorium on cuts in service standards and mail processing facility closures. But the USPS Board of Governors can stop the cuts without an act of Congress. That’s what we will be demanding at 150 protests across the country on Nov. 14,” he said.

  1. And what, pray tell, will “ANYBODY” do with the extra “profit” or “cost savings”?
Give more money to the US general fund, to be wasted and misspent on other crap that will produce nothing, create nothing, and only cause more money to be lost to a pet project?
Didn’t you see the movie “Hot Coffee”? There is no compulsion for any business to pass on savings in a reduced cost, when that company operates for profit.

  2. Cut the fat at the top starting with Donahoe! This is a no-brainer! Then continue with the rest of the morons that don’t touch the mail..

  3. I’d say if you think less service is an asset, your coffee being delivered cold would also be an asset ! ISSA crock ! !

  4. cut po mismanagement by 75%……..just maybe you will save the place. the way they have padded the mismanagement ranks by over 100,000 (over 40 Vice-Presidents) is criminal. what do you call getting rid of 50,000 po mismanagers——-a start!

    • Actually, Donald Trump is going to come in and cut everyone right to the bone over a three or four year period. Management will be pared down clearly, but most of the union jobs will be out sourced. Companies will be built around replacing our processing plants using non-union labor. Letter carriers will be replaced by in-house non-union labor. All of this will allow him to cut costs and increase profits.

Donald Trump is not about making a better product but about increasing the bottom line.

  5. the best thing that these democrats could do would be to fund an outside private company that deals in management issues……….to come in and review and cut the bloated, wasteful, redundent, incompentant po mismanagement. there are over 100,000 po mismanagers of all stripes, 99% of which have no college/university education. is it any wonder the po mismanagement has lost over 60 billion since 2009. letting the people fix it who ran it into the dirt-is just insane. I would like to see somebody like donald trump take a chainsaw to the bloated po mismanagement…..bet he could cut it by 60% and you would not notice any difference.
