USPS: New self-service kiosks pilot program a success in New Jersey

Last November, USPS launched a self-service kiosk pilot program at 15 locations nationwide.

The new kiosks have several new features — including a scanning capability — designed to upgrade customer satisfaction with the self-service experience.

Clifton, NJ, Postmaster Sam Diaz, whose facility was one of the 15 pilot locations, says the scanner has made a big difference. “Adding updated software, faster processing and a bigger and more vibrant screen have also helped create a more convenient and efficient automated experience for customers,” he said.

With the scanner, customers can scan the barcodes on their packages without having to wait in line. The kiosk also can be used to purchase stamps, make a payment on a PO Box and track parcels.

Kiosk prompts, also available in Spanish, should be familiar to customers who check out their own groceries or use an ATM. And at the Clifton Post Office, lobby assistants also are available to help customers become familiar with the kiosks.

“Once they become familiar with them, they use them more often,” said Diaz.
