Woman tells Local 6 post office staff refused to communicate through writing

PORT ORANGE, Fla. – A deaf woman said a post office in Port Orange discriminated against her when staff members refused to communicate via writing.

The woman wants to remain anonymous, but she texted Local 6 about what happened when she asked the clerk for help with mailing some packages.

“She became agitated when I informed her I am deaf and need her to write down the answer to my question,” said the woman.

The woman claimed she explained three times to the employee that she is deaf and can’t hear but said, “I pointed to the paper she had pulled out. She mocked me by pointing at the paper I had but speaking at me again. I asked for a supervisor. She became angry and pointed that I had to go away from her section of the counter.”

  1. What is the big deal ? They treat employees the same way . Just look at all the discrimination lawsuits filed by employees !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Someone is going to get a BIG promotion over this .

  2. Clerk was afraid the woman would use words of more than 4 letters she could not understand or read.

  3. “Postal Service management has investigated and remediated the situation.”
That means she was promoted– probably a supervisor now

  4. wow,
It’s tough being a window clerk and working with the public. The NEWS is good for twisting things around as usual. This would be a good episode for SNL, because it’s a joke.

  5. As if management doesn’t do enough to make the public think of how pathetic the USPS can be, we can always count on the shit eating employees like these window clerks to step up to the plate and be terrible to a deaf woman.
I have a blind young man on my route and the home routinely gets parcels. Normally somebody else answers the door, but when he’s home alone I always identify myself and set the parcel inside the house at a location he needs it to be to keep from tripping over it if he forgets about it. He can sign his name if I need a 3849 and I’ll take his hand and place it where the line for the signature is. He’s very nice and polite, and I certainly have no trouble with him or his family at all.
That’s how you are supposed to act, actually whether you’re in pay status or not. We are all susceptible to being injured and/or disabled ourselves if we’re not already from birth. My wife has a skeletal birth defect, has lost one foot, has severe lumbar scoliosis and dyslexia. That’s a pretty big plate to handle, but she does so with more grace and patience than you’d believe was possible, and so do most disabled people. When we act like impetuous jerks when we have to serve them, we show that at least mentally we are much worse off than the person we’re supposed to help.
I hope this clerk was severely disciplined because they deserve it.

  6. florida, what a shock that people can be so lame, sadly the offenders will get promoted
