The Postal Service is testing redesigned uniforms with a focus on evaluating the performance, functionality and safety features of various winter gear.

Approximately 2,000 employees are participating in cold-weather apparel tests in Boston, Houston, Milwaukee and Pittsburgh. USPS hopes to test warm-weather apparel in other cities in the spring.

“Uniforms are a marker of personal, professional and brand identity,” said Brand Marketing Executive Director Betty Su. “Postal Service letter carriers are particularly proud to wear their uniforms, and we’re eager to work closely with our workforce and other stakeholders to explore the possibility of modernizing employee apparel.”

The National Joint Labor-Management Uniform Control Committee, consisting of USPS and National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) members, is overseeing these apparel tests.

Other groups involved include Brand Marketing, Labor Relations, Operations and Corporate Communications.

  1. hey!! What about us window clerks! Our uniforms are not anything to look at! How about something with a little more style!!!

  2. A good idea to have colors a bit darker as the current light-blue shirts pick up newsprint ink stains that don’t come out.

  3. Testing the winter gear in Houston, Texas? Who’s testing the summer stuff, Fargo?

    • what are you talking about? It almost hit 32 degrees here this past winter in Houston. we had a cold winter you might say

  4. get rid of that red stripe across the chest…Try moving that stripe to the middle section and make it white. The white stripe should act as a reflection when we are delivering in the DARK.!

  5. liked those hugo boss uniforms of the german army in ww2. gets my vote for best dressed soldier. was that on the postal pluse survey?

  6. Definitely need a new pant design. The stripe down the leg looks stupid and is outdated. Women need more options; like short rise, relaxed style (not so confining) and waistbands without that rubberized strip around the inside. Very irritating. Especially in the summer when your hot and sweaty and shirts are not tucked in. Also a nice, hoodie jacket would be sweet!!

  7. I suppose a uniform upgrade is due. The uniform allowances will have to be increased if the prices are too high. I personally will not get to try the new outfits in all likelihood, retiring at the end of 2016, and knowing how long it takes management to implement anything. But what the hell is Houston testing winter wear for? Somebody better learn how to read a map.

  8. It’s about time! There isn’t ONE carrier in the whole post office that does not want a new uniform, as in new pants, new shirts and new jackets. It would be really nice to get the head gear to all all match up too. I cannot wait for this-make it happen

    • I’m hoping for some new trucks myself. the one I have now keeps breaking down
