CHEEKTOWAGA, N.Y. (WIVB) – Sunday is currently the only day U.S. Postal Services have off and what else did about 500 workers on their free day do, but rally to keep Saturday mail delivery.
Postal workers and community members protested the Postmaster General’s plan to eliminate regular Saturday delivery.
They have one reason to celebrate thanks to Congressman Brian Higgins for passing a bill to stop that plan from moving forward.
The Postmaster General said the move would save $2 billion dollars a year. However, members of the National Association of Letter Carriers disagree, saying it would actually cost them.
Doug Ford from the NALC branch said, “We estimate we would probably lose business. Take away 17% of our service, we could lose up to $5 billion worth of revenue. because people will go elsewhere.”
Congressman Higgins blames current leadership for the current postal service financial problems.
“This Postmaster General has been a disaster,” Higgins said.
Postal workers rally to keep Sat. mail
R U Serious; U are 100% correct.
Do you really think that 5-day delivery will not save the USPS money? In our area, we have some contract routes that deliver mail every other day. This seems to have been working for years. What is hurting the post office in our area was the closing of mail working facilities and the shortening of our post office hours. Depending on the direction something is being mailed, it may take 3-4 days longer than it did in the past. Our mail carrier gets in after the office is closed now. This means that some packages do not leave until the following day. Eliminating Saturday mail, instead of making more internal cuts would DEFINITELY benefit the USPS and its customers!
I know this might sound a little naive but why do we not just raise the rates on postage to be in alignment with the rest of the world’s postage. I know this sounds too simple but our rates are probably 2/3rd what they are in european countries and they only travel the distance of perhaps 1 or 2 of our states. Why is this not on the table as a solution? This might also work for a solution to the Social Security solvency problems.
YOU are the one that “needs” to go Higgins! What did YOU do to alleviate the situation? NOTHING. When the “friends” of the NALC had control of BOTH houses of congress AND tyhe White House, what did THEY do to solve the crisis? You have your answer in what we are dealing with today…. And congress, with the unions’ help continues to let the USPS flounder with this so called 6 day “law”. I really don’t like Donahoe much, but given the circumstances, what did you expect him to do? By the time you overpriveleged morons in congress and the union get around to offering any meaningful solutions, it will be too late….
go Judy from Jersey! I like the way you talk
I’m thinking that if we end Saturday mail delivery, they offer a buyout to the top carriers, whom will fly out the door, then the bottom carriers who you claim will loose their jobs, will simply move up. All will be well. If too may top carriers take the buyout, hire more CCA’s. Just like they hired PTF’s. Most top carriers are nearing 60 and cannot do all that running around with heavy mail that they did 25 years ago. Enough already, let them go
@ainkur, you are certainly entitled to your opinion. however, i looked at donahoe’s actions since he became postmaster general.
i agree totally with the assessment that he has been a ‘disaster.’ in fact, i think anyone that looks at donahoe’s performance would actually be very kind to only say ‘disaster.’ donahoe is a clueless lifetime bureaucrat whose actions have driven away billions in usps revenues. as postmaster general, patrick donahoe has been a complete and unmitigated failure! donahoe’s actions and lying ways have also caused some usps employees to never again believe one word that comes out of the mouth of a usps manager, the ramifications of which will negatively affect the usps business model forever.
Ainker – Donahue is right and everybody else is wrong? Were you just at the bash in Frisco?
Clearvision – I am a union officer and I hereby deny your request to make the union do anything you request, sorry!
If you really want to know the truth in numbers regarding the USPS you should request that management prove the BS they are selling. Fortunately, the USPS Board of Governors and our Congress know there numbers are BS. See you SATURDAY!!!!
Oh my, mr Higgins says the PMG has been a disaster! I believe most (common/level sensed) people would say CONGRESS is the disaster! In their non-performing, non-accomplishing, super vacationing, “we hope to get this done” attitude, blames the PMG! … Let’s see, about 2 years ago now PMG said, can’t make that 5 BILLION $ payment, so I’m going to close about 3,200 offices that “do not” make a profit, then of course congress puffs their chests & says how it will so terribly it will hurt their “rural” constituents (now there’re gonna have to hitch up the horse & buggy to make it to the next PO), the PMG gave a 6 mth moratorium on closures, congress got “nothing done” so the PMG just shortened hours. He’s trying to deliver parcels & medicine only on Saturdays, he is thinking & trying, but when you have a “Board of Governors” the PRC & about 574 congressman & senators to try to please (not to mention the unions!) how in the world can this guy do ANYTHING that will please all?
I want the union to be required to “prove” that eliminating Saturday “junk mail” delivery, will cost 5 billion dollars. Oh, that’s right, they CAN’T because it’s a big, fat LIE.
give back the over payment owed to the postal service, 27 billion in over payment for pensions. the court gave it back to us but bush denied it, instead creating the health requirement for future employees not born yet, and surely not to be hired, ever. in addition, trim the management staff by 50% and save another billion.
