Las Vegas Police work the scene of a fatal wreck at the intersection of Mount Hood Road and Owens Avenue involving a United States Postal Service mail truck on Saturday, Nov. 14, 2015. Brett Le Blanc/Las Vegas

Las Vegas, NV – A 62-year-old U.S Postal Service carrier died in a three-vehicle crash in the east valley Saturday afternoon, Las Vegas police said.

It happened about 3:15 p.m. at the intersection of Owens Avenue and Mount Hood Road, Metro Lt. Jeff Goodwin said.

Police said a 61-year-old woman in a 2103 Nissan Altima ran a stop sign, hit the 1994 Grumman mail truck, causing it to overturn and eject the man. The Altima continued and hit a parked 2000 Chevrolet Malibu.

The driver of the Altima and her 79-year-old passenger suffered moderate injuries and were taken to University Medical Center, police said.

At the scene, the mail truck was seen resting on its roof. A sheet covered its driver as Postal Service employees arrived.

  1. these old junk death boxes(1994)……..union still lets em on the road. NALC just cares about 10% raise’s for themselves and trips to Las Vegas……oh wait the accident was in Vegas…….Rolando will now fly in to play craps….er investigate the accident scene. another postal criminal. postal/union mismanagement janus coin-two heads same coin.

  2. Don’t be so quick to assume that this carrier was not wearing his seatbelt. From personal experience, in the past 10 months I’ve driven 2 different LLV’s with seatbelts that have disengaged for no reason other than pressure on the belt. On one occasion I was stretching out the window to reach a low box and the other time I was reaching for a parcel far on the tray. This should NOT happen. Of course for this poor deceased carrier, there are no sensors or ” black boxes” in these old vehicles to investigate after such a tragedy so everyone just assumes he/she was not wearing their seatbelt. That is just not fair.

  3. Did he have his seat belt and shoulder strap on or not? Also, did he have his door closed? If he did and was ejected because of a seat belt failure then let justice prevail. If he didn’t have his seat belt and shoulder strap on and door closed, then shame on him and oh well. Carriers are constantly hammered about not moving their vehicle unless they are secured in their seat and the door is closed. Especially while crossing a intersection.
Many years ago while crossing a intersection, after delivering my route and returning to the Post Office, I was hit by a truck that ran a stop sign and didn’t brake, they call it a (full impact,T-bone crash). I was knocked unconscious, my vehicle spun around twice, and his truck ended upside down against a light pole. I survived because I followed the rules of safety because I care about my life and my families security.

Please don’t get me wrong, my thoughts and prayers go out to this carriers family because it wasn’t his fault the idiot didn’t stop, however, his life could have been spared by doing the right thing.

  4. Oh Lord my God, horrible, Horrible, Horrible, To all Postal Vehicles drivers or Operators never move your vehicle of any size w/o first, (1) fasten and lock your seatbelt. How many times the seatbelt issue is the determining factor whether you live or have a chance to survive.. The employee would’ve most likely survived. How will that resolve itself had the carrier been in a hurry-up mode to get back, according to the Supervisor expectations. Las Vegas, Nv isn’t Postal friendly in many instances and some of the employees could care less about much it. How many Carriers are concerned in the Staples Protest campaigns outcome. Sounds political, however, this is the offsprings of what happens when protocol is not followed, end of story. May God Bless this Family and USPS employees to survive this onslaught of tragedies we face in the Job market.
