Is Trump stealing a page out of the Bush/Cheney 2004 election campaign?
Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump said Saturday he doesn’t care for Colorado’s mail elections and suggested ballots that elections workers don’t like might be thrown out.
Trump held a rally at the Jefferson County Fairgrounds on Saturday.
Here’s the quote:
“I have real problems with the ballots being sent. Does that make sense? Like people say, ‘Oh, here’s a ballot, here’s another ballot, throw it away. Oh, here’s one I like, we’ll keep that one.’ I have real problems so get your ballots in. We’re trying to get some pretty good supervision out there. We have a lot of people watching you people that collect the ballots.” Read more
Trump’s allegation is reminiscence to charges made by the George Bush/ Dick Cheney campaign against letter carriers back in the 2004 Presidential election:
The Bush Cheney campaign sent a letter to Postmaster General John E. Potter charging that “letter carriers may be failing to deliver election mail in Florida and other states “from homes that appear Republican.”
The Bush/Cheney campaign charged:
Recently the Bush-Cheney campaign received anecdotal reports that mail carriers in Florida and elsewhere have suggested that they would consider failing to deliver ballot materials from homes that “appear Republican.” This type of behavior is both morally reprehensible and illegal.
In response NALC President William H. Young, wrote:
“I am outraged at the allegation – without any substantiation – by the Bush-Cheney campaign that letter carriers may be attempting to influence the presidential election by failing to deliver election material in Florida and other states. Letter carriers for over a century have played a vital role in maintaining the integrity of our nation’s election process and have no interest in altering that tradition by attempting to sabotage the results of this election. “It is a shame the Bush-Cheney campaign chose to denigrate the reputation of hard-working letter carriers across the nation by publicizing these unsubstantiated rumors without any evidence of their validity. “The Bush-Cheney campaign owes every letter carrier in America an apology.”
It appears that Trump owes election officials and the mail-in ballot process this same type of apology due to the fact:
Colorado’s elections are mostly run at the county level, where elected clerks are a mix of Democrats and Republicans. Regardless of the party affiliation of the person at the top, each county has bipartisan teams of judges who verify signatures and process ballots. Read more
I know the majority of the USPS employees are trustworthy and honest, there are always a few, in any organization, that give the rest a bad name. Earlier I read of a carrier in Houston who had been arrested for identity theft, using their customer’s mail. Amazingly, the judge let her have her job back, “as long as you don’t open any letters”, I guess USPS didn’t argue!
Then, also on the Postal Reporter website, another carrier was caught on video, removing a Trump campaign sign from a persons yard.
So, I would say it wold be unlikely, but certainly not impossible, for a carrier to “lose” a few ballots.
To “What do I know? Just a craft employee”: It is good that you are an “honest, reliable and hardworking” person, and I would vehemently agree that you are right to question the trustworthiness of a candidate for president. I am hopeful that you are a balanced, objective and fair-minded person as well, in which case your honesty would compel you to question the trustworthiness of the other candidate to an even greater extent given that candidate’s history and track record.
I dont care what you people say about trump I’m still voting for him. I would not vote for that lying, screaming, crazed, hyena hillary if you put a Bazooka to my head.
Sir, I have stated several times that i respect your work record, I have also read where your union was not the flag ship that it once was by your own rating. I have also read where you have stated that the 3 black guys were referred to as though
they were all though the court system, and found to be the ones in the wrong. You make some reference to minority neighborhoods. I know you have been around the block many times, You know that the color of ones skin is no reflection of
values in their heart. In the past the USPS has made it a policy that the Hatch Act
was strict. All Postal employees could not hide behind their uniforms. Your
customers are from all walks of life, and must be treated with respect!. I hope
as your time comes near, that you are remembered for your commitment to service, rather than the passion of the political season!.
Yet,another indication of how U.S.A national politics have gone totally”mentally retarded”!!
What does one expect from Mr. Bankruptcy? While he brags about being a tax freeloader, on how he files bankruptcy because he is such a smart businessman. One must wonder how his ex employees, and the construction workers shafted, feel about Mr. wonderful? What do the people of Atlantic City, N.J. think of Mr. big time operator? I thought ex President Forrest Gump, with his weapons of mass deception, was the lowest ever. Boy was I wrong, Mr. Donald Bankruptcy is the bottom!
The union can not have it anyway they want, and be believeable . You have postal
employee’s delivering mail at 2.00 am, and you are not smart enough to come up
with a solution that takes in customer needs. I don’t know what you are smoking, but
it must be dam good. The USPS is failing America in every way possible, Please
stick to doing your job, save your comments to when your memberships problems
are addressed, and they are safe trying to serve the public . Playing politics is a side
issue.
Trump can’t resist attacking anybody. Now it’s the USPS and its clerks and carriers who handle the mail. We face loss of our jobs and arrest on federal charges for knowingly “dumping” mail, such as in a dumpster, hiding it, destroying it or otherwise deliberately not handling every piece properly.
I have been a letter carrier for 32 years plus, and in all my years I have never pulled a dishonest stunt. I am proud of the work I did, and that was well before the pre-internet days when mail volumes as far as letters and magazines, papers, etc., known as “flats” to non-postal readers were enormously heavy. Now the emphasis has switched to parcel delivery. We still get letters and flats, but personal correspondence is usually limited to bills, other statements, and hand written letters to friends or relatives from elderly customers who didn’t get caught up in the computer age and jails and prisons where inmates apparently are not allowed internet access or printers.
But Trumpty Dumpty, you are a first rate piece of shit. Your adoring followers are already showing up at some polling places in minority neighborhoods, determined to try to intimidate voters. You are the one behind any possible voter fraud, you lying SOB, and since your chance of being president is almost zero you’re already being the spoiled baby brat poor loser we expected you would be.
I am honest, reliable and hardworking. I care about people, their mail and my job. You are none of those things. I wouldn’t trust you with delivering a post card to the house across the street.
