USPS disavows notice claiming PO closed for Gen. Robert E. Lee instead of Martin Luther King Jr. Day

1/17/2017 SPRINGDALE — A U.S. Postal Service representative said downtown post office workers had nothing to do with a notice on the door Monday that claimed it was closed for Gen. Robert E. Lee’s birthday.

The notice on the front entrance at 429 Holcomb St. stated, “Closed in rememberance (sic) of General Robert E. Lee’s Birthday. January 19 1807-October 12 1889,” with a photo of Lee.

Monday, the third Monday of the month, was Martin Luther King Jr. Day, a day that Arkansas, Alabama and Mississippi also observe as Robert E. Lee Day.

Leisa Tolliver-Gay, a customer relations official for the Postal Service, said the notice was “absolutely not” posted by a post office employee or representative.

Gov. Asa Hutchinson recently said he aims to remove state recognition of the Confederate general from the day that is nationally recognized in remembrance of King.

  1. Martin Luther King,Jr.,Robert E.Lee,were they really born on the third Monday in January;or was George Washington, actually born on the third of Monday of February? This Febuary legal holiday is now know,as Presidents Day. Unless,we are going to get the retail sales reduced prices we really want,or the social events we really want;frankly who gives,a SH.T?

  2. I just love all you “free marketers”. The farmers all depend on farm price subsidies, free crop insurance, businessmen depend on their wealthfare, and how many parents pay tuition for their children’s education? Seems as though the people that believe in the “free markets” would rather have the tax payer pay their obligation! Why should the “free marketers” pay the cost of education, school sports, transportation, and the tax payer subsidized lunch when the tax payer can be stuck. Maybe Trump will drain that swamp. And while he is at it, drain FEMA. If one’s home is damaged, why should the tax payer be stuck with that cost?

  3. We will always have such clowns among us. The trick is to give no publicity to the juvenile stunts. The more attention they get, and the more consternation they cause, the happier they will be. Nothing would make the pranksters happier than seeing that they have succeeded in upsetting the public.

  4. Traitor? Lee wanted to succeed from the corrupt Northern States…………just like I would like President Trump to sell off the corrupt, money-losing US Postal Circus to UPS/FDX so I can get payroll deduction of discounted company stock for my work. Do I call myself a traitor? Do I call myself a Capitalist and not a Socialist or Marxist? Do I call myself a fighter of anti-corruption…..you can bet your last dollar I do! I would agree that there were people who could not stand the thought of seeing the Third Reich fall. Were they all traitors of the German Nation? In a free market the Postal Circus would not last one day, bring it on man, bring it all down man! The Postal Circus is not run for the American People, it is run for PFP Bonus cash! Trump said he will investigate ALL government departments at some point in time……I can’t wait till he gets a look at this dump.

  5. Why would various states celebrate a birthday of a traitor? The good old boys down south always rant about how disloyal people are that burn the flag, while they celebrate someone that raised arms against our flag! I don’t understand!

  6. Many of the Postal employees view issues from different perspectives, and their right. Whomever did that doesn’t work in the system. MLK Day is a Postal Regular Holiday, all workers know that and contest no pay for the MLK day.
    Nice try though.
