Trump Suggests USPS Cut Retirement, Health Benefits in $46B Savings Package

– President Trump proposed overhauling the U.S. Postal Service in his fiscal 2018 budget released Tuesday, calling for a slew of changes that would save the agency $46 billion over 10 years.
The White House suggested USPS bring its retirement benefits in line with the same changes proposed for the rest of the federal workforce, which would save the agency $33 billion over the next decade. The Postal Service would also save $1 billion under Trump’s plan by increasing employees’ contributions toward their health and life insurance.

Similar to reform legislation in Congress, Trump suggested USPS increase collaboration with state and local governments, reduce to-the-door mail delivery “where appropriate,” change its governance structure and create postal-specific assumptions about the demographics of the USPS workforce to prevent possible overpayment into the agency’s Federal Employees Retirement System account. The proposal said the Postal Service should have more flexibility in setting its prices, something postal management has also advocated.

Here are a few excerpts from Trump’s 2018 Budget:

  1. Nothing but political bs again. We see this all the time and nothing happens. Everybody needs to take a breath.

    • I agree. Clearly posturing and not what will actually happen. But this type of posturing is a negotiating tactic to get something small that might pass as a “compromise” to this. But is should still be taken seriously. After all, death by a thousand paper cuts, is still death.

  2. Im just worried about the social security supplement…..hopefully it will get deleted in the final draft!

  3. I know that the Postal Service doesn’t use tax dollars! I was saying instead of screwing the employees and the poor out of pay and benefits, cut funds from the business bastards. I ‘m not the idiot. The people that voted for President Dump are!

  4. to all you usps employees who voted for trump: you see what he’s trying to do to your job? happy now? idiots!!!!!

  5. Ya…cut fixed incomes of retirees….make us great again on the backs of those retirees…brilliant! ….Cut Service again and not Management/overhead…brilliant!

  6. Every company on Earth used the computer to cut salaried positions.
The Post Office used the computer to create more dead ass jobs.
Why Doesn’t Trump demand to cut all the middle managers that
every other company did after the last recession.
    Not much of a CEO

    • Amen, sometimes there are more supervisors in the building than craft employees!

  7. Would be dearly sweet to see all the idiotic postal trump fans take it up the a $$.

  8. Im sorry cut retirements. Didnt we just have to prepay 75 years worth of retirement payments? What kind of horse shite is that?

  9. @Wtodd – the Usps receives absolutely NO TAX DOLLARS WHATSOEVER!! The post office has not received one dime from tax payers since 1977! Please do your research then stop breeding.

    • The postal reorganization act of 1970 eliminated our tax funding. After its passage, we continued to receive annual tax monies, in ever decreasing amounts, until 1982. 1983 was the first year we became the first and only quasi-federal entity. Though we are still a department of the executive branch, we have received no tax dollars since then…

  10. @Wtodd – the Usps receives absolutely NO TAX DOLLARS WHATSOEVER!! The post office has not received one fine from tax payers since 1977! Please do your research then stop breeding.

  11. First: The USPS is the only gov. agency not supported by tax’s. Second: they only charge for service’s the customer’s is asking for.

  12. Not so American Trump! Thought you were for the American workers and the American People!?!

    • What part of No tax dollars don’t You understand?….In the black if you take the elephant of prefunding off our backs!

  13. Time to cut aid to dependent business. Business should be self reliant. They should not be allowed to suck off the tax payer!

      • No it’s not. It gets $18 billion in subsidies each year along with access to the treasury where it can borrow $15.2 million a year at 1.2% interest. Those subsidies are at some point are tax payer backed.

      • If you are actually an IRS Exec, no wonder your agency is run so poorly. I don’t even think you would make it in postal management with such stupidity. Don’t you guys have to have at least a GED?

    • The postal service does NOT rely on tax payer money. It is a self reliant business that is confined by legislation so that it CANNOT operate at a profit- it essentially has to “break even”.
It’s in the red because it is the only agency required to Prefund retirement.

    • They haven’t received tax payer funding since 1976.
The “missed” payments are due to Congress making it law the Postal Service pre-pay their retirement Healthcare by 75 years. No other government or private business does this.
This would be like you having to fund your great grandchildren’s retirement health care and have 10 years to do it in. (They are currently prefunded for 45 years)
I don’t know about you but I couldn’t do it.
Without this refunding agenda the Postal Service makes approx 5 bilion a year in profits. THEY DO NOT GET HELP FROM TAXES!!!!!!!
I suggest you do a little research and not believe everything you read.

    • Lol if u buy postage ur paying for us to deliver not taxes know ur facts before u preach

    • Not everyone works the weekend. Carriers have rotating days of with atleast having Sunday off (unless you are non career and delivery Amazon packages)
So they get Sun/Mon then Sun/Tues then Sunday/Wed and so on. Clerks have set schedules only working Sunday if you work at a processing plant.
It says 5 day delivery not no Saturdays. Not having Saturday delivery hurts the Postal Service because it looses revenue expecially the businesses who rely on delivery and pick up on Saturday (at no extra charge)
This also weighs heavier on carriers because they now have 3 days of mail/packages to deliver on Monday and if Monday is a holiday they have 4 days of mail/packages which in turn causes 1-2 days of overtime. The Postal Service never stops proccessing. Some even work Christmas to get the mail/packages out.
Do some research and you would be surprised how inaccurate the published articles are.

    • You assume Saturday will be the day of no delivery. Wrong. If it happens, it will be Tuesday or Wednesday. That means split days off.
