That’s the complaint in and around this northcentral Pennsylvania community since its mail processing facility closed and work shifted to a Harrisburg-area facility.
The consolidation is part of a national cost-saving effort being carried out by the U.S. Postal Service, which has experienced a 25 percent decline in first-class mail volume since 2006.
Williamsport-area residents and businesses say mail is being delivered as late as 9 p.m.
Wyrope Williamsport Federal Credit Union in South Williamsport recently went three days without a delivery. A manager eventually ran down a mail truck. The credit union put a notice in its newsletter advising people to put payments in the mail earlier.
A postal worker union official said he has received complaints, including one from a Jersey Shore resident who said it took 21 days for a vacation deposit check to reach Wildwood, N.J.
U.S. Rep. Thomas A. Marino, R-Lycoming, who opposed the closing of the Williamsport operation, said, “Once again it is a terrific example of stepping over dollars to pick up pennies.”
