APWU: Statement by President Dimondstein on outrageous White House plan to privatize USPS

06/21/2018The White House proposal on restructuring the federal government released today, “Delivering Government Solutions in the 21st Century,” delivered nothing but misinformation and, if implemented, would end regular mail and package services at an affordable cost to 157 million addresses every day. Furthermore, the White House plan is an attack on many federal agencies and the public services they provide.

APWU overtime penalty exclusion period

The White House’s plan states, “Like many European nations the United States could privatize its postal operator…” What’s left unsaid is European nations charge substantially more for mail services delivered in a much smaller area. They also regularly raise the cost of delivery. For example, the cost of sending a letter in the United Kingdom has increased 80 percent over the past decade. By comparison, the U.S. has the lowest postage rates in the industrialized world.

Eliminating the universal service obligation, as the plan suggests, would hurt business and individuals alike, and would be a dagger aimed at the heart of rural America and undermine e-commerce.

The draconian plan uses “burdening the taxpayers” as justification to promote the privatization of the U.S. Postal Service when the truth is USPS is self-supporting and receives no tax dollars for postal operations.

And, while letter mail volumes are lower, package delivery is up substantially. No institution is better suited for the e-commerce revolution than USPS.  The public postal service serves each and every person and belongs to the people of this country. According to recent surveys by Gallup and the Pew Research Center, it enjoys the highest level of satisfaction and trust of any government service or agency, rating the highest among young people.

Privatizing the Postal Service is not in the public interest or the interest of postal workers and would be nothing more than a raid by corporate pirates on a national treasure.

This outrageous White House plan should be a wake-up call to every postal worker and APWU member. The threats of postal privatization, the threats to decent union jobs, the threats to good services, are real.

The American Postal Workers Union stands with the people of the country and our many allies in the ongoing fight to ensure a vibrant public Postal Service for generations to come.

More information and calls for action will be forthcoming.

  1. The many Postal employees that support President Dump seem happy that the Postal service will go down the drain. And some brag about their UPS/FDX/AMXN stock, and how intelligent they are because they are sooo smart and everyone is stupid. Do you think your pal MR.Leader cares about you? Just as much as you care of others! And as for your retirement, it will be cut. Royal mail removed the employees from the government retirement and cut the income of the annuitants. Last year Royal Mail cut the income again. The employees went on strike, Royal mail reduced the cut. Big deal. So enjoy, you asked for it! Now remember you are sooo smart and won’t mind at all. Your retirement cut while the rich will hug their money! your pal once said on Larry King Live ” Rich people are better than poor people, that’s just the way it is” You won’t care because you are going to be rich yourselves.

  2. Can’t wait for Trump to get rid of the worthless Unions and even more worthless layers of management. The Postal Service has been a dumpster fire ever since the decided to make it the poster child for affirmative action.

  3. Ya…a “space force” seems more viable. Wake up…when supervisors, postmasters and other management receive bonuses every year for basically do zilch. How bout we nix the bonuses and save some noney there? Hmmm…sounds too smart i am sure. How bout also going to 5 day work weeks with 7 day parcel delivery? Let be honest here Trump is not a great bussiness man and has proved that year after year….but don’t complain now cuz alot of you morons voted for him.

  4. A lot of union people including in the Postal Service voted for Trump. Thanks for nothing. Just because a lot of people got plunked the day they voted for Trump. Now we will all pay that price of the downfall. Get out and vote in November don’t make the same mistake twice. Stop voting against your interest. Please I just pray that this bill doesn’t pass. The Postal Service needs to get they’re act together. It’s one of the most hostile environments with no accountability. Change needs to come just not privatization.

  5. It is a good move Mr. President. Let privatize the USPS, let get rid of fat cat Unions, who are not protecting members instead support those liberals politicians.

  6. USPS has lost billions, but none of that is due to Postal operations. All due to the retiree health benefit prefunding resulting from the 2006 PEAA. That is what is “ripping the place off.”

Management has not received any “bonuses” since the PFP system was introduced nearly twenty years ago. PFP is the only raise EAS get and the vast majority have received nothing for the past four years. Whether or not they deserve anything is another issue, but get your facts straight. Supervisors and Postmasters don’t get a raise, even 1% just for showing up as the craft does.

Closing the sorting plants would work fine in areas where mailers drop at the delivery office, but vast sections of this country are too far flung to make the savings worth the cost to drive it to the offices. And what happens to the (admittedly decreasing) personal letters and individual packages? How do they get sorted and routed from the mailing offices to the recipient? Yes, a lot of plants could be closed (although APWU is pushing Congress to reopen those that were previously shut down) but not all.

  7. say you have a Honda Accord with 278,000 miles and the repair shop says it is done, toast……..all your crying and wailing will not change the fact that the car is toast. Factoid……the Postal Circus is that Honda……..its toast. President Trump is the repair guy, he is just telling you what you already knew with the high miles, get over it. go buy a new car model……UPS, FDX or AMZN all shiny and new and run like a top. if you purchased 1000 shares of AMZN stock in 2005 you would now be able to pay cash for a Rolls Royce and have change left over (1.7 million) po is to a landline phone as AMZN is to a G8 smart phone. get over it. your little civil service brain is behind the curve.

  8. “USPS is self-supporting and receives no tax dollars from taxpayers” BUT WE HAVE LOST OVER 135 BILLION SINCE 2007! talk about an oxymoron from a moron! at least we clerks know with the 1% crummy yearly raise we are not the ones ripping the place off. Brennen & Diamonstein 2 peas in the same pod. I love how Trump plays these goons and thugs! getting PFP bonus money when you lose $135 Billion……want to comment on that one Diamondshill!

    • another Me, Myself, & I clown rubs his 2 brain cells together………….you go to unemployment within the next 5 years….count on it.

  9. With cvs, amazon, fedex, ups, and even eddm’s all dropped at our office, we could get all the sorting plants closed because all the real work is done locally, and we all know that the mail volume is going down and we can go back to sequencing bundles of bbm and 2nd class. The savings from all the deadweight being gone from the sorting plants would really make us profitable. No hiding spots for apwu in small offices.
