Minnesota Postmaster charged with theft

Houston County prosecutors have charged the former Brownsville, Minn., postmaster of stealing more than $1,000 from two post offices.

Cheri Smith, 38, of Dakota, Minn., is charged in Houston County District Court with two counts of theft. She returns to court July 24 for an omnibus hearing.

Audits done in April by special agents with the Office of the Inspector General and other postmasters found Smith between May 21, 2012, and April 8 stole $1,407.99 from the Brownsville and Dakota post offices, according to the complaint.

Smith admitted embezzling the funds from money orders and stamp sales. She’s also accused of altering financial reports to conceal the shortages, the complaint states.

Smith resigned Tuesday, post office spokesman Richard Watkins said.
