APWU Executive Board Endorses Bernie Sanders for President

The APWU National Executive Board voted on Jan. 29 to endorse Senator Bernie Sanders for President of the United States.

In light of the importance of the presidential election and in response to many inquiries from members as to the union leadership’s position, a number of “top tier” candidates, or their designees, were invited to address the Executive Board. Candidates who oppose the public Postal Service were not invited.

“We’re pleased that a number of presidential candidates have positions and have taken actions supportive of postal workers and expanding union rights. But when we judge candidates by their long-term and consistent actions, Bernie Sanders stands out as a true champion of postal workers and all workers throughout the country,” said APWU President Mark Dimondstein.

“Bernie Sanders has proven he is a fierce advocate on the side of postal workers. He has opposed the closures of postal facilities and reduced service standards. He has been a leader in the fight for expanded postal financial services and was the lone senator who stopped postal privatizers from appointments to the Postal Board of Governors.”

Senator Sanders’ commitment to working people extends far beyond postal workers. He has a long record of walking picket lines, fighting for living wages and health care as a human right, advocating for veterans’ benefits, promoting expansion of social security and opposing every job-killing trade deal like NAFTA. Because of his record, Senator Sanders is now rated as the most popular senator.

The positions of the Sanders campaign align with the APWU’s core principles of social and economic justice for all, as expressed in our union Constitution and by delegates to our national conventions.

In a speech to APWU convention delegates, Sanders displayed his long and passionate commitment to the public Postal Service and opposition to all efforts aimed at postal privatization: “The beauty of the Postal Service is that it provides universal service six days a week to every corner of America, no matter how small or how remote. It provides decent paying union jobs to some 500,000 Americans and is the largest employer of veterans…. Yet, the Postal Service is under constant and vicious attack. The same billionaires who want to privatize Social Security, Medicare and public education also want to privatize the Postal Service….The wealthy and the powerful see an opportunity for Wall Street and corporate America to make billions in profits out of these services and couldn’t care less how privatization or degradation of services affects ordinary Americans.”

Bernie Sanders accepts zero corporate dollars and his “Not Me, Us” campaign slogan reflects Sanders’ belief that the campaign is not about electing one individual but rather, “… building a movement with millions of Americans to take on a corrupt political system that holds in place a rigged economy.”

“The National Executive Board encourages members and their families to be registered to vote and where available sign up for absentee ballots to exercise this “vote by mail” option, continued Mark Dimondstein. “The Executive Board fully recognizes and respects that our members come from all walks of life, hold many differing political beliefs and vote according to their own conscience. However, for the Executive Board to remain silent at a time when the current administration advocates selling the entire public Postal Service to private corporate interests, would be a failure of our leadership. As with 2016, once again the Sanders campaign is boldly uplifting the goals and aspirations of workers. Simply put, we believe it is in the interests of all postal workers, our job security and our union to support and elect Bernie Sanders as president.”

  1. Bernie??? Hahaha…. good old APWU, supporting yet another loser!… TRUMP, 4 more years! KEEP AMERICA GREAT!

  2. I can’t believe so many out there believe Bernie is a Communist. You would rather believe lies. A professor from York University said that Das Fuhrer has told over 17,000 lies since he ran for Mr. Big Stuff. Something to be proud of! I bet everyone that hates Bernie and Socialism can’t get their children to a tax payer funded school fast enough, you will never pay tuition, why should you when the sucker taxpayer is forced to. And the moment they can receive Social Security and Medicare they will be first in line to collect their Socialist handouts. So go ahead and support President Bankruptcy Six Times. When your retirement and health care is gone, tough it’s what you asked for. Just enjoy your capitalist utopia. Fend for yourself, but don’t forget to suck off the tax payer when you can!

  3. Is this the same Board that wouldn’t allow the members to even know what was in the contract that was recommended by there negotiating team? I think we need a new Board

  4. So Bernie is a Communist. Just because he believes in single payer health care and worker rights. The people that hate public benefits don’t mind sending their children to tax payer funded schools. You will never see them pay tuition to a private school! why should they when the tax payer can pay. And I’m quite sure they will refuse to take Social security and Medicare. Go ahead and suck up to Das Fuhrer. When you lose your retirement and health care do you think anyone will care?

    • There have been so many that visited the soviet Union and came back to the USA in awe. The COMMEE agenda in the USA your little ol bernie has his COMMEE hands in grassroot levels and underhanded USA anti-US Constitutional agendas. Let’s not leave out COMMEE bernie’s porn writing archive. The only smart one in COMMEE bernie’s life was his 1st wife, she bolted for the door. All democrats, progressives, socialist, communist have the same political doctrine of “positive liberties” . You must like being embezzled and controlled from cradle to grave. Luckily there is a vast landscape of US Citizens that are of individualism the US Constitution and American liberties. The resistance to all democrats COMMEE agendas grows stronger by the moment.

  5. since 1917 the communists have murdered over 120 million souls and these morons support that-supporting pure evil is not the way to go threw life…….then APWU talks about degraded service……look in the mirror you bums, by supporting Potter, Donehoe, & Brennen (all losers) you have helped degrade the US Postal Circus. loss of over 210 Billion since 2009 (have defaulted on prefunding so don’t go there its a canard) 33.5 years of 1% raises tells you it is not the workers causing the red ink because the crummy raise is below inflation, make yourself useful for once in your life and get us a cash buyout……….you can ride the wave into the beach by yourself with your status quo mindset. another loss of 748 million in 1st quarter 2020 while UPS made over 2 Billion. Marvin Runyon was spot on when he said he could get rid of 50,000 mismanagers and not even notice they were gone. I find it funny that the Joe Biden Family steals more then the Postal Circus makes.

  6. I am a retired USPS employee and former APWU member for over 30 years. This endorsement of Bernie Sanders by the executive board of the APWU is shameful but not surprising. It would be ignorant of me to exclaim that unions as a whole are not politically left leaning. I get it. To a point, I understand it and empathize with the unions that feel obligated to behave in this manner. But to then present itself as a body who’s mission is to further advance working conditions of laborers and the labor force in general, to speak for those workers who’s voices would otherwise remain silent, to promote publicly elected officials who promote the ethics and morals of the “working man”, is disingenuous. The APWU is endorsing a candidate who promotes amnesty for illegal aliens and to allow said peoples to be allowed to work illegally in the USA. As recently as 2015 candidate Sanders has said that illegal migration only makes Americas working class “even poorer” because they are the demographic group that is forced to compete against illegal aliens and newly arrived immigrants. Those are Mr Sanders words but apparently not the view of the APWU. Mr Sanders advocates free health care for all under Medicare. This negates the hard work and negotiations that were done by the APWU and it’s membership in securing affordable, quality health care for its members. There are far more examples of poorly run government programs than there are efficiently run ones. I’m a realist and facts and numbers matter. It might be time to endorse a candidate, regardless of party, who actually has produced for the working class.

  7. They’re annoying monotonous. The also endorsed Bernie Sanders, for the President. Early,in 2016. Remember!! Michael Bloomberg,is the best hope, for ousting,President Donald Trump. Bloomberg(2020)!!

    • What i believe would be a bigger disgrace is forget about civility. You have learned nothing from Lincoln, or Theodore Roosevelt. Both men were from the
same party, but at 180 degrees from modern disrespect. Part of being free is to believe as one thinks !.

  8. The endorsement is predicted and probably ok for the membership. I am a life long Dem and voted for mr T, and will probably vote again. Now if I was not retired, I would vote for the endorsed candidate of course! I paid union dues for 38 years and stuck with all of the unions endorsements, go with BS! Headquarters on several occasions asked to continue membership after retirement for only 3.00 per month. I could not do it, so far I have saved 252.00 and that’s no BS.

  9. Endorse a communist, how wonderful.
For the working man? What a joke. He’s only after enriching his family, just like Plugs Biden.
Opposed to fossil fuels, which makes the whole world run.
He would literally destroy the country’s economy. How would that work for postal employees?
It is reasons like this endorsement that I never belonged to the union, and never regretted it for 35 years.

  10. HAHAHAHA

Too bad, that lazy POS hasn’t done squat the 40 years he’s been in office…oh wait that kinda sounds like 80% of the upper union membership!
He will NEVER be my choice or any real AMERICAN for that matter!!

    • Never voting for a COMMEE who’s elated with the Soviet Union utopia for years.
APWU union member here. Have you guys gone bonkers
Voting Trump, as my democrat voting days are far behind me
      “negative liberties” voter here
All democrats, progressives, socialist, communist follow the same political doctrine “positive liberties”
