Illinois coronavirus: Unique Clay becomes first active Chicago postal worker to die of COVID-19 a week after giving birth

CHICAGO — A Chicago U.S. Postal Service letter carrier has died of COVID-19.

Unique L. Clay, 31, was pronounced dead at 8:47 a.m. May 5, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office. She lived in Englewood.

Clay, a mother of three who had just given birth a week earlier, is the first active letter carrier in Chicago to die of the virus, according to a statement from the National Association of Letter Carriers. She worked for the postal service for two years.

An autopsy found Clay died of a novel coronavirus infection and ruled her death natural, the medical examiner’s office said.

More than 30 letter carriers in the city have tested positive for COVID-19, the union said.

  1. My heart and prayers go out to her family! I am a postal worker from Las Vegas and our entire postal membership here also feels the family’s loss! Hazzard or heroes pay is a must for all postal workers and this tragedy is one small example of what dangers we all face at the Postal Service day in and day out!

  2. A very sad story. 31 years old, and a new life. I pray that USPS is serious about checking temperatures. I hope it more than lip service, like the high blood pressure
checks that never happened. I worked for a heart less boss that told me that I was
Awol with a blood pressure of 220/120 while on family approved leave. What matters
is that you look out for each other, as the unions, and USPS may not. The hero’s that
you all need are in each of your mirror’s. Common sense is in short supply, so speak
    up, and stay safe.

  3. So I remember our “great leader saying the ” virus will just disappear like magic, and telling people to just inject yourself with bleach or Lysol and your lungs will be cleaned out”. And demanding people go back to work and make money to save business. what about saving his citizens? even those whom he wants to destroy their jobs?
