USPS will close Beaumont, TX mail processing center

USPS has announced the Beaumont,TX mail-processing center will close and its operations consolidated into North Houston (TX) Processing and Distribution Center (P&DC). Retail operations in the Beaumont mail facility  will temporarily remain open after the processing functions relocate to North Houston. The total distance between facilities is 87.5 miles.

According to USPS the employee impacts (as of May 2013)

Craft Employees Impacted at Beaumont TX P&DF – 94
Proposed Craft Positions to be added at North Houston P&DC + 55
Net Craft Employees impacts due to consolidation – 39
Net Management Impact + 8
Net Employee Reduction -31

The following is a statement released by USPS which says in part:

As a result of a study that resumed on May 1, 2013, the Postal Service has made the decision to move mail processing operations from the Beaumont Processing and Distribution Facility (P&DF) to the North Houston Processing and Distribution Center (P&DC) in Houston. Once the transfer of operations is completed, the Beaumont P&DF will be closed.

Local mail service will not be affected by the move.

Affected career employees will be reassigned to the North Houston Processing and Distribution Center or to other vacant positions.

A retail presence will be maintained at the Beaumont P&DF for a limited period of time; however, after the consolidation and subsequent modification of South End Station, retail and other services currently available at the Beaumont P&DF will be relocated to Beaumont South End Station, approximately 4.5 miles away. A local postmark remains available for stamped First-Class Mail at our retail locations.

Delivery times of mail to most residences and businesses will not change as a result of the AMP.  However, delivery times of mail to some residences may change due to concurrent cost saving activities in delivery.

The Postal Service is also conducting an Area Mail Processing (AMP) feasibility study at the Amarillo, TX Processing and Distribution Facility (PD&F) and Midland, TX Processing and Distribution Facility (PD&F) for possible consolidation of some operations into the Lubbock,TX PD&F.
