Latest PMG video focuses on healthcare and legislation
In his latest State of the Business video, PMG Pat Donahoe discusses healthcare and reports on two recent Senate hearings regarding the future of the Postal Service.
Donahoe begins the video by declaring that USPS will resolve its healthcare issues by making sure employees and retirees receive their full benefits. He says the Postal Service and its employees would realize significant savings if retirees eligible for Medicare could make full use of the program like those in the private sector.
The PMG says USPS and its employees are the nation’s second biggest payer to Medicare. Because Medicare and the Federal Employees Health Benefits program have never been fully integrated, each employee pays significantly more in premiums than an individual in the private sector. Employees also aren’t eligible for the Medicare Part D prescription drug plan, to which they also contribute.
“Our contention is we’re paying for it so we should get to use it,” says the PMG. “If we can integrate Medicare like everyone else, it resolves the retiree health benefit.”
Donahoe made this same point, along with representatives from the General Accounting Office and Office of Personnel Management, during a recent Senate hearing. During a second hearing, he recommended Congress give the Board of Governors full authority to set rates and let USPS have more freedom to bring products quickly to market.
“We’ve got to be moving at a quicker pace in the economy and e-commerce world,” says Donahoe.

The PMG and VPs are still keeping the current health care intact from FEHB because after the first year of will be gutted and you’ll only be able to see the quacks the USPS selects.
