Vietnam veteran finds success at USPS

Prior to beginning his career with the Postal Service Elmer Rothwell, manager, distribution operations at the Queens, NY, P&DC, served in the Vietnam War. In 1970 he sustained serious injuries. Rothwell lost his right leg below the knee and had extensive damage to his left ankle, which had to be fused. He wears a prosthetic on his right leg.

Three years after he was injured, Rothwell began his career at USPS as a clerk. Since 2004, Rothwell has worked on Tour-2, currently managing 100 to 110 employees. He also has served as acting Plant Manager in Atlanta.

Rothwell says he loves the people aspect of his job most, serving as a motivator and mentor to other employees. He adds that treating people with dignity and respect is his primary managing goal.

“Elmer has shown me over the years what a person of dependability really is,” said Queen’s P&DC Manager, Gloria Reid. “He does what he says he will do, when he says he’ll do it. Seeing him perform his work daily with such dignity and capability compels me to see ability, not disability.
