Ex-Willimantic postmaster accused of getting 55 pounds of pot in mail

WILLIMANTIC — A former Willimantic postmaster has been accused of getting an illegal delivery — 55 pounds of marijuana.

Willimantic police arrested Jeffrey Mazzola, 57, of Willimantic, on Friday. Mazzola turned himself in and was charged with criminal attempt to possess more than 1 kilogram of marijuana with intent to sell

Police intercepted two suspicious packages mailed from Arizona in June and discovered they contained about 55 pounds of marijuana with an estimated street value of $55,000.

“It was never delivered to him,” Glode said.

Glode said the investigation took longer than usual because the packages were delivered from Arizona, and police had to work with authorities there.

He said Mazzola has been aware of the investigation for several months.

Mazzola was appointed Willimantic postmaster in 2002 after working for 23 years in the U.S. Postal Service, according to a Bulletin report. He no longer works for the USPS.
