Postal Inspectors investigating incidents of “skimming” at USPS self-service kiosks

Protecting USPS self-service kiosks from data thieves
sskPostal Inspectors are investigating incidents of “skimming” at USPS self-service kiosks.

Skimming occurs when a thief places an external device near the card reader of an ATM or other self-service machine to steal bank card numbers. Criminals use the captured card information, including PIN data, to create dummy cards to make unauthorized purchases that can drain a victim’s bank or credit account.

Inspectors have arrested skimming suspects in several states and continue to investigate these crimes.

To protect customer data and USPS revenue, the Postal Inspection Service recommends employees visually inspect self-service kiosks at least twice daily to look for evidence of tampering. Employees should vary the times they inspect the machines to prevent criminals from recognizing and taking advantage of a pattern.

Postal Inspectors also recommend employees follow these steps when inspecting self-service kiosks:

Check the card reader to see if a plastic piece was placed over it or inserted into it. If you see a device or other foreign item, don’t remove it. Report it to Postal Inspectors at 877-876-2455 (press 2).

Check the plastic strip near the top of the kiosk that bears the manufacturer’s name, “Wincor Nixdorf,” to see if it’s loose, doesn’t fit well or can easily be removed. Do not call attention to any device you discover.

Disconnect the kiosk until you receive instruction from Postal Inspectors.
