Dainton Coley, 34, denies launching anti-Muslim tirade at two women wearing hajibs on a street in Brooklyn, New York.
“I’m not crazy, I work in the post office,” Dainton Coley, 33, told his victim after he threatened to burn the Muslim woman’s mosque down during the Friday evening hate crime, police sources said.
Cops took Coley into custody early Tuesday and charged him with aggravated harassment, menacing, and acting in a manner injurious to a child for making the tirade in front of the infant.
Back in April, cops showed up at his Canarsie home and treated him as an emotionally disturbed person after he began drinking heavily and claimed to hear voices, police sources said. Read more
Dainton Coley, 34, defended himself against charges that he repeatedly spit at the Muslim woman before announcing he would “burn your Muslim temple down.”
Coley, released without bail after his early Wednesday arraignment in Brooklyn Criminal Court, denied making the ominous statement.
“I don’t know where there is no Muslim temple,” the U.S. Postal Service employee told the Daily News. “Where is the Muslim temple? I never been inside one.
“Maybe she was having a bad day. But simply, I respect every religion and I never said that to the lady, that I’m gonna burn down any temple.”
Coley was charged with aggravated harassment in a hate crime, menacing and acting in a manner injurious to a child — the alleged victim was pushing her infant daughter in a stroller during the tirade last Friday, police said. Read more
It seems the world borrows more trouble than it creates. I don’t understand if we expect anybody to respect our personal religious belief system, politics or other values why we seem to think we don’t have to respect anybody else’s. Humorist Dave Barry, who is usually a lunatic and a great laugh, did address organized religion while being specifically neutral, refusing to identify any by name, and I couldn’t agree more, and I paraphrase: people are always pushy and want to impose their religion on you, but they don’t want any pushed back at them.
Common sense, which is becoming a rarity in this day and age, would dictate that we allow each other to practice their views in peace, as long as the laws of the land are not violated. We certainly couldn’t condone any violence from any party, rioting or terrorist activities to force our agendas. One thing radicalism doesn’t seem to figure out is that it doesn’t attract new converts, but turns potential believers away. In that sense the followers of their faiths are their own worst advertising by the way they act.
This letter carrier may have been off duty, it looks like, but as long as he had the uniform on, he was sending a message to other people, in this case allegedly, one of hate and intolerance, and terroristic threatening, which we need to remind ourselves he denies. People are quick to lump bad people into their parent group – a bad cop like the one who murdered the youth in Chicago has done yet again incredible damage to policemen all over. We do not need the kind of behavior this carrier exhibited, or the junkie shooting up in a church parking lot.
It is important to let the public know that for the vast majority of us, letter carriers are responsible good people, but in a service that employs the most people in the country, odds will dictate you are going to get some sour grapes in the bunch.
After all, Muslims and all religions’ followers have in this country to right to their beliefs as long as they pose no threat to others. To automatically assume someone is violent, wants to murder innocent people just because they are followers of Islam or Buddha or Hindu, is paranoia and only demonstrates to those radicals who do want to destroy innocent lives that their terror tactics work. We’ve lost the psychological war against religious hysteria because too many people here in Christianity especially are hysterical themselves.
I notice so many problems with the new part time employees of today. The part time employees of today know that they are “disposable” workers. And so they don’t have the same work habits as the career employees had. Give them better pay, working conditions, and the promise of a lasting job! Though we know now in America workers are just though of as sources of cheap labor! The worker must produce so the rich bastards can become richer.
