Alabama rural carrier jailed after delivering mail under the influence

A Jefferson County mail carrier was taken to jail after authorities said she was under the influence while on her job and on her route Monday night.

Sheriff’s deputies responded around 7 p.m. to a report of a white Jeep Wrangler driving recklessly on Taylor’s Ferry Road in western Jefferson County. A witness called the sheriff’s office and said they had pulled in front of the Jeep to stop it.

The witness, authorities said, took the keys from the driver, who was identified as a mail carrier delivering mail, said Chief Deputy Randy Christian. When deputies arrived on the scene, they were told by witnesses that the mail carrier had nearly struck them and that is why they took her keys.

Deputies administered field sobriety tests, which showed the mail carrier to be under the influence of some substance that impaired her ability to safely drive. Christian said the Hueytown Post Master came to the scene, and took possession of the undelivered mail.
