August 7, 2015 WALLINGFORD, CT — Expanding its presence in the state and along the East Coast, Amazon plans to open a sorting center on Research Parkway.
The company is unsure when the facility will open.
Amazon refers to the facility as a “sortation center,” which differs from a fulfillment center. Packages delivered to the sorting center will already be in sealed boxes, which employees will organize by zip code to be sent out for delivery.
By creating the “sortation centers,” Amazon hopes to avoid shipping delays, according to Bloomberg Business.
The facility is across the street from the U.S. Postal Service sorting and distribution facility, 24 Research Parkway.
To increase the speed of deliveries to customers, Amazon has launched one-hour delivery options in certain locations and has tested the possibility of using drones for package delivery. Toso was unsure if Amazon’s increased presence in the state could lead to other delivery options.
The article says “across the street from the USPS”.
