APWU Denounces USPS Plans To Accelerate Closure of Mail Processing Plants

“The APWU is outraged by USPS plans to accelerate the closure of 71 mail processing plants that were originally slated for possible consolidation in 2014,” said APWU President Cliff Guffey.

“These closures will eliminate jobs, harm communities, and delay mail delivery every day — Monday, through Saturday,” he said. The consolidations will drastically curtail local mail sortation and will virtually eliminate overnight delivery.

“The Postal Service is on the brink of cutting service in a way that will permanently damage our treasured institution. This would be a tragic mistake, and it is unnecessary,” Guffey said. The USPS notified [PDF] the APWU on March 26 that it would implement 53 consolidations this year that were originally scheduled for 2014. In January, the Postal Service said it would accelerate implementation of 18 other closures.

“Congress must act now to enact meaningful postal reform — reform that restores the Postal Service to financial stability without destroying service or harming postal workers,” he said. “And Congress must act now to prevent the Postal Service from implementing these devastating cuts in service.

“We are calling on members of Congress to support the Postal Service Protection Act, which was introduced in the Senate and House on Feb. 13. This legislation would address the cause of the Postal Service’s manufactured financial crisis and allow the USPS to develop new products and services, so that it can remain relevant in the digital age,” he said. The Protect Service Protection Act would protect — at least temporarily — current service standards.

  1. Once again the political winds that blow into the sails of politicians in Washington are propelling a ship called After You. I am calling it that because once the APWU and the politicians from both parties are done with the day’s business they must certainly have drawn plans to go after our jobs.
It makes little difference to them who is going to be at the receiving end of any deal already worked out. Once After You raises its anchors those the ship is leaving behind were really never part of any plan to save the P.O.
Yes,the union has helped in a number of occasions nationwide but today’s union leadership is more concern with the next round of golf. I have seen more than enough of what the new contract Guffey and the boys and girls at national gave us. Nothing to do but wait until 2015.

  2. WHAT, 25 million per day. Maybe not, if you look at it being 15 billion per year, that comes to around 41.095 per day. There must be some fuzzy math going on here. Lets also go down to 4 day delivery. I don’t care, even living out here in the middle of no where, i have not much use for snail mail. Some of these people think they know what we want, they just don’t have a clue.

  3. You can`t blame this one on Tom Coburn and Darrel Issa. I big thanks and a shout-out goes to (former) Labor Union Supporter Tom Carper (D-Del). Judas is alive an well!

  4. Bayou makes perfect sesnse. Congress hasn’t done squat in years and now its outraged. 25 million. Just think about that.

  5. The Whole world is NOT Losing $25 million a DAY. Wake-up idiots. For years ineffective management and Union Blooddsuckers drained the assets of the Postal Service; be it through congressional inactivity or contract negotiations. 5 Day delivery will save monies and remaining jobs of employees with years left to retire and preserve universal delivery. Can anyone of you Mensa Members tell me what company can sustain itself when losing $25 million a DAY?

  6. More evidence that Agency will dismantle the workforce for until nothing is left. Blatant Sabotage. How about our $7.00 a pay period COLA!wow, I can almost buy a 6 pack with that. Thanks for kissing mgt’s butt Guffey! $7.00 is a lot of money in other countries but not here in the USA! Give us a real COLA.

  7. Keep spouting that old school dem/union garbage. How much do you think Rolando makes? He doesn’t want his gravy train to stop but I haven’t heard any real effective suggestions coming from him. He writes a real nice socialist propaganda piece every month though.

  8. The 47% that mitt romney and the republican party said they don’t care about depend on six day delivery oh by the way the constitution which protects gun ownership also protects six day mail delivery.

  9. How can do nothing congress be outraged? They created this mess with the retirement overfunding in 2006. Oh by the way, they have spent this money and are dragging their feet to repay this because they don’t have the money. Wow can’t wait until 2014 when we can vote out everyone who is up for re-election democrat and republican. President obama should just resign as congressman issa from california has more power than him as any strong president would of put him in his place and the would of fired the pmg donahue.

  10. Here comes The APWU to save the day denouncing a plan that was set for the future…next they will say we didn’t know…
    You go Guffey…you go!!

  11. Here we are calling on Congress to act..how long has it been? We hear the back and forth, but never closer to any resolution. I realize things take time, but the USPS has been screaming for years now. The stern is pointing up and slowing bobbing, and every day draws us closer to that dark abyss.

  12. Well, well, well!! Again, we have to remind you stupid butts that the unions are failing. The Postal Service will and can do whatever it wants, with or without Congressional approval. Guess we will see how much our Medical Insurance will go up along with, what, won’t be covered due to NOBAMA CARE! Each and every one of us with 20 to 30 years invested better have a backup plan. Soon our Thrift will be taxed out the ass and the Postal Service Contribution will be null and void. EAT CAKE AND CHOKE AND THANKS FOR YOUR VOTE FOR THE ANTI CHRIST. He will be taking his next vacation on your retirement money and Michelle our Belle will be the next to run(I MEAN RUIN) our country. OH! There is no Easter Bunny this year! It is not allowed.
