EMERGENCY ALERT – CALL YOUR SENATOR NO LATER THAN TUESDAY, FEB. 4th, 2014!
Today the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs met to mark-up the flawed postal reform bill S.1486. The markup has been suspended which allows us time to act. This bill, which would threaten more than 100,000 good postal jobs, is strongly opposed by APWU and the other postal unions and should be defeated. We urge all of you residing the home states of Committee members to immediately call their senators and tell them to vote ‘NO!’ on S. 1486.
If this bill becomes law it would:
- Recklessly diminish collective bargaining for postal unions
- Lead to pension cuts
- Mandate the USPS pre-fund workers’ compensation by $17 billion further strangling USPS finances
- Allow the USPS to close and consolidate mail processing facilities after 2 years
- Reduce service standards after 2 years.
- Reduce mail delivery to 5 days
- Reduce workers’ compensenation benefits
APWU Legislative & Political Director John L. Marcotte observed that “this proposed bill has nothing to do with securing a vibrant postal service that is vital to the American people. What the postal service needs is reform that allows us to serve every American with high quality first rate service while relieving us from the choke hold of unnecessary prefunding.”
Proposed amendments will not lessen the devastating impact on postal workers!
CALL YOUR SENATOR and tell them to VOTE NO on S.1486.

“It is crucial that the postal unions stand together to defeat legislation like S. 1486, which would be very detrimental to postal workers and to the people of this country,” said APWU President Mark Dimondstein. “The Postal Service belongs to the people, and postal unions must work together to keep it that way.”

keep 6 day mail,in my office i work 20 of my days off a year, that’s a whole lot of ot to give up.
5 Day here we come
My own sorry ass Senator is worthless. Mark Pryor (AR) is a nominal Democrat but votes Republican so much that the last time he was up for re-election the GOP didn’t even bother to run somebody against him because he was voting with them 79% of the time already!
This is not reform. It’s another push to wipe out the USPS and turn it over to private industry. While the issue of five day delivery is most commented on, that mandate of $17 billion is worse than the pre-funding requirement we already suffer under. The big mailers won’t pay a fair price to fill our mailboxes with junk, and we city letter carriers and rural, for that matter, use more overtime than anything else with marriage mail which amounts to a profit loss because the individual piece rate is too low (11 cents) to cover the overtime.
What is the point of keeping business if it costs money to do so? It’s simple: direct mailers are greasing palms at Headquarters. It’s the only thing that makes sense. It’s very discouraging to think that those people who are at the helm who can help or hurt us are all crooked lawmakers and inept upper level postal management. At least that bill is stalled for the time being.
They should offer early outs to all employees with 30 years service.I lost my job in Reading Pa. and got sent to Lehigh Valley Processing Center and have to commute 100 miles a day, this place is the most hostile and abusive work place I have ever encountered in my life.Postmaster General Donahue should be ashamed at what he has done to the Post Office and its employees,he has caused so much damage he should resign along with Megan Brennan. All employees deserve to be treated with respect and dignity which they so much deserve, working odd shifts with days off during the week, like Monday,.Tuesday off.I think they should pass this bill because we really do not have good Union representation like they all think because these conditions would not exist if we did.
Let the bill pass I commute 100 miles a day to the most hostile Post Office Lehigh Valley P+DC.30years plus working for these dimwits and I have Thursday Friday off on 2nd shift and have not been able to see my son for over a month, let us retire and sell off the PO.
I think the 1st of many great future weekends off, I’m going to order in, lay next to a cozy fire, grab the ky…….. And rub one – of many out!!!! 5 day delivery bitches!! Oh it’s comin……. Literally!!!!
Call your senator for sure!
Urge them to do whats right and not what all the special interest groups & the unions might be pushing for.
We all know who take the money
We will all know how they voted
I know how I will be looking to use MY vote as well…
The USPS as we have known it is about to perish all in the interest of Congressional vote getters. What a shame folks , their mothers should be proud of them ?
Reduce delivery to 5 days a week. The need for 6 day street delivery no longer exist. A past time need but not today. pensions should be protected and not reduced. A flawed postal bill in hurting employees both present and when retiring.
Eliminate wasted cost as several major ones exist.
Let the bill pass
