As Nov. 6 draws near, APWU President Cliff Guffey is urging union members to “get out and vote!”
“With all the new voter ID laws passed in the last two years, it is more important than ever that people know what they need to take to the polls to make sure their vote is counted,” said Guffey.
“This has been a long campaign and the stakes are high, especially for working people,” he noted.
“We must change the direction of our nation,” the union president continued, “and voters have the power to do so.
“I urge all APWU members to vote on Nov. 6. Vote as if your job and your future depend on it, because they do!”
APWU Legislative and Political Director Myke Reid urged union members to take steps now to ensure they are able to vote.
- “Voters can check their registration status by visiting www.canivote.org,” Reid said, “and, in many cases, problems still can be fixed.”
- Polling places may have changed since you last voted, he said. “Make sure you know your voting location and what ID you will need at the polls.”
- “Once you get to the polls, don’t take ‘no’ for an answer,” Reid said. “If you are a registered voter, don’t leave your polling place without casting some sort of ballot.
- For a checklist of what you need to vote in your state, go to www.866ourvote.org/pages/state-specfic-voter-education-materials.
- “If you encounter a problem, request an emergency paper ballot or, as a last resort, a provisional ballot.” (Provisional ballots are less likely to be counted.)
