APWU President Mark Dimondstein calls for PMG Donahoe’s resignation

postal10POSTAL UNION PREZ TO POSTMASTER: ADIOS: In an exclusive interview with POLITICO, Mark Dimondstein, president of the 200,000 member American Postal Workers Union, calls for the resignation of Postmaster General Patrick Donahoe “and the promotion of a Postmaster who is gonna do right by the people of this country.”

Dimondstein says that Donahoe is on “a rampage to cut, cut, cut” and has no plan to save the Postal Service, which shed 37,400 jobs in 2013 alone and is projected to eliminate approximately 169,000 jobs by 2022.

What could the Post Office be doing? Dimondstein said that the final straw was the failure of Donahoe to embrace Senator Elizabeth Warren’s plan to stabilize Postal Service’s financing by introducing postal banking.

In an email to POLITICO, USPS Spokeswoman Patricia Licata replied that the Postal Service lacked legal authority to perform many of the services Dimondstein demands. For example, she said that USPS could sell gift cards only as a “market test,” but not on a permanent basis, unless it could demonstrate “that such cards are likely to be mailed once purchased.

  1. diamonstein is making himself look like an idiot just like Rolando did when he requested the same thing from the PM….. and the game continues. it’s no wonder the general public laughs at us. this really is getting comical

  2. Get the teamsters to help our union? Visit NLRA.com and find out about decertification (of APWU)process.

  3. this would be funny except our jobs are at stake so while our president stands there and calls for the postmaster to step down (i’m sure he will mull that one over) they are making deals to give our work to staples. is there any way we can get the teamsters to help our union, maybe we would have a chance.

  4. Sooooo…telling the PMG to resign gets you a photo op? Name one union president that hasn’t called for any PMG’s resignation. Just another photo op designed to impress rookie lemmings who have no clue. Why doesn’t someone ask Diamonstein about his role in representing private contract drivers who are taking jobs away from APWU MVS craft drivers? Why not ask him about the hush hush officer only retirement fund paid for by union dues but inaccessible to the ordinary peon?

  5. Most likely the 169000 reduction will be clerks. The elected APWU president approach to resolving issueswill be lead to extinction of the clerk craft.

  6. Mark ~~ you should be asking King Obie to resign,,, and stand a better chance of it happening.

  7. I believe Donahoe’s been asked to step down previously and his reply was “its not a popularity contest”

  8. Naturally, Fred Rolando, the NALC national president is hiding out. He should be in lock step with the other unions, other than a wussy “paper” or letter sent to Congress. Rolando’s job is up for grabs this year, and while I doubt he’ll be removed, he may be surprised to see a lot more votes for his competitor David Noble than he expects. It’s like big time politicians who can use their war chests and muscle to drown the competition. The NALC magazine “The Postal Reporter” is making almost no mention of the contest other than telling members to vote, and it’s very pro status quo. Incumbency has its privileges.
We as a union (NALC) are not doing nearly enough to put pressure on Donahoe. We’ve practically given up the ghost with the DRT and CCA programs, and now it looks like we aren’t interested in pushing management at all.
