Update on $56 Million Settlement
2/01/2016 – Information provided by the Postal Service reveals numerous management errors in the initial payment of a $56 million settlement to employees in small offices, Clerk Craft Director Clint Burelson has announced.
Following discussions between the union and management, the Postal Service wrote in a Jan. 29 email, “We will be working diligently over the next few days to correct errors and resubmit for payment.”
To determine the payments due to employees after the December 2014 settlement was reached, the Postal Service provided the union with the names of the impacted employees and the number of hours they worked, using their Social Security numbers as the key identifier, Burelson explained.
The APWU then provided the Postal Service with the proper payment amount for each employee, based on a formula that took into account the amount of time employees worked in affected Level 15, 16 and 18 offices.
However, in many cases, in submitting the names for payment, the Postal Service’s Labor Relations Department apparently entered the wrong Employee Identification Numbers (EINs). This was the cause of most of the incorrect payments.
“There were numerous errors with EIN’s which will only come to light through feedback from employees and the APWU,” management wrote in the Jan. 29, 2016, email. The APWU has the EINs on file for employees and retirees and Assistant Director Lamont Brooks is working with the Postal Service to fix the problems, Burelson said.
The Postal Service made some corrections in checks issued Jan. 29, and has indicated that management will continue to make corrections until all employees are paid the proper amount.
I would just like to know what to do with the overpaid money if its too much to just take out of one of my regular checks…Also I assume the are not charging me taxes for all that money the are giving me and know taking away…that would be a nice trick.s
So management made an error! Will anyone in management be disciplined? Yes, they will ! They will be promoted. They will also be forced to be called into the office and be given a bonus and a donut.
Further evidence still that management is inept and hires idiots into its world. I wish I could name names, but it’s just plain insulting to have to deal with these morons every day at higher levels. Our supervisor is a stand up guy, and we’re very lucky, but like other supervisors or local management that are decent people, and there are some out there, they are at the mercy of the core of the corruption and moronic programs that get shoved down the ladder.
I will retire at years’ end and I’m scared frankly that even though I’ll start the process the first available date in July, somebody somewhere will get my information and thoroughly fuck everything up – my TSP, annuity and regular pension. And the bad part is, they will fix it but take their sweet time doing it if it happens. I know not to borrow trouble, but anybody with 31+ years in can’t be faulted for not being especially confident.
Take the scanners – three times yesterday my stupid “scan request” went off over a block away on the wrong street every time. Then I heard that management in district is upset because carriers are entering “already passed address” too much. Well guess what, you dumbasses – GPS is supposed to be accurate. You are the ones who created this faulty program, so go get pissed at yourself. At least as lousy as this GPS program is, they’ll never be able to accurately tail anybody.
Made many errors???? How convenient. It’s funny how no errors are made when you owe them money. They have your proper EIN number then. I’m an example. I lost all those hours to my PM, I’m on the list with the proper amount, but have yet to see payment. Maybe I should give them my EIN number.
Wow its amazing that these three stations equal $56 million. Why only three stations???!!!
I worked in Gracie Station at 85st in Manhattan. The union came to the station, saw supervisors and management doing the clerks work and the union was going to write a report on the station. What’s happening, who’s lying ?
When there is a settlement isn’t it for everyone!!!
What “three stations” are you talking about? the settlement affects thousands of employees at post offices across the country. To be eligible, your office had to be level 15, level 16 or level 18.
Why cut office hours down…People want convient hours .. so when they can get to the post office in there busy day..the office is open… Close the tiny [post offices..providing there is one close…within 5 miles of the one there closing… Why keep cutting post offices hours…make it convient.
They live to throw money away!
I can not believe that Management made an error when it comes to
paying craft employees grievance money. It must have snowed in hell.
Fire them all.
Why just Level 15, 16, and 18? There’s alot of us who lost hours and pay by being forced into 6 hrs office coming from level 20 whom eperienced the same as far as Management working Clerk duties. I dont understand.
File a grievance.
Hi Gloria, it’s simple, in level 20 and above offices all employees are full time and normally the Postmaster doesn’t work the window. At the smaller offices they were working the window and other clerk duties.
spot on, brother!
Management made an error? I’m shocked there’s gambling going on in Casablanca.
