Burrus: Take a Deep Breath

Postmaster Donahoe has announced plans to convert to five day delivery and the response has been as expected. This is a “do not cross” line for the labor unions so their demand for immediate cancellation of the intended plans was on cue but it is hoped that in private discussions there is serious discussions about an alternative solution. Saying no is not a strategy, but a reaction to unacceptable solutions and the Postal Service needs a strategy. The response cannot be ‘do nothing’ beyond calling Issa and Donahoe derogatory names

Given the USPS’ financial position with little or zero reserves something has to give or there will not be full paychecks in the not too distant future; saying no to five day delivery while Congress sits on its hands is a path to insolvency. So, if as expected five day delivery is a nonstarter, the available option is to pressure Congress to take up reform and get it done. The current House Bill includes unacceptable features and that is the challenge to successfully achieve amendments, get it to a vote and soon. Pat Donahoe has made the first move and it is now up to the other players to do something that adds revenue to the Service ‘big time’ and cancellation of the health care payment will not get it done. We can engage in what ifs forever, but the immediate question is five day delivery or what.

  1. Don’t hate the player, hate the game. This is America. Freedom of speech and the right to live your life to the best of your ability.

  2. I assume the “career” apwu officials will take their golden parachutes (aka APWU Officer Only Retirement fund) that was paid for by the lemming membership’s dues money but not accessible by the minions. Is that a shock to you? Ask about it at your next union meeting if they’ll let you ask under new business. I challenge you all to grow a pair and demand a full explanation of this fund and why you can’t have any. I know one in particular that will be quadruple dipping when he goes…military, social security, usps pensions AND the APWU Officer Only Retirement fund.

  3. The Clerk craft has been constitently downsized as well as Maintenance, mostly custodians. The Postal Service eliminated the Special Delivery Craft several years ago. They are now threating and are in full swing of eliminating the Motor Vehicle Craft, starting with the drivers. It’s about time for the Letter Carriers to absorb some of the necessary cuts. Believe me, I am a retired clerk. Maintaining the last mile theory would devastate all postal employees except the letter carrers. Let’s truly show our unionist by supporting proposals that can save the postal service.

  4. I am utterly stoned by the stupidity of 5 day delivery ELIMINATING JOBS. Its pure BS. It’s SIMPLE math for a two year old. You cannot cram a six day workweek into a 5 day work week. That increases the daily delivery of an adjusted 8 hour route to 9.5. You then have to increase the cases+cell sizes and it CREATES ROUTES. Do you all get the simple math that is required to do a 5 day delivery?? As for delivering parcels on Saturday that is insane. You cannot deliver all parcels on Sat. Ninety percent of those parcels will be delivered the following week. Take into consideration all the house to house and bulk mailings and you have volumes hitting the street Mon thru Fri that will turn all Vol’s into non-vols!! You will never hurry up a Union letter carrier. 25% of mail volume has dropped in ten years…it won’t drop anymore. EXPLAIN to me how this eliminates jobs and I will tell you that you DO NOT know what you are talking about. I am a letter carrier. The only thing this serves to save money is taking all our vehicles off the street for one day which will save millions per week. This is the only cost saving to be achieved here and the rest is more BS from Postal Officials that liken the lies of Banking Execs that have ruined the planet and do not get prosecuted.
I ask all of you again!! How do you take a six day route evaluated at 48 hour delivery per week to a five day delivery at 40 hours per week without creating more routes, harder delivery days and leaving the office later? I HATE DELIVERING WHEN IT’S DARK by the way!!!!

  5. Folks: When September rolls around the PMG will go to all the postal unions and NAPPS and HE WILL TELL THE UNIONS THAT THE U.S.P.S CAN NOT PAY THE EMPLOYEESS. SO ALL THE UNIONS WILL TAKE A 25% PAY CUT ACROSS THE BOARDS..

  6. NNE; Your an Idiot! Burris retired, so now he`s a Traitor? Do (you) plan on working until you drop? Fool!
PS: He (has) found another “hobby”. Getting slack jawed mouth breathing idiots such as yourself to make asinine Postings!
