Cleveland OH: When will the postal service catch up on mail delays?

1/19/2021 CLEVELAND (WJW)– Weeks after the holidays, many of you are still wondering if the U.S. Postal Service will ever catch up on delays delivering the mail, so the I-Team investigated.

Nothing coming in the mailbox. Many people getting no help online from the postal service. No answer on the phone.

The I-Team is now pressing to find out how long you’ll have to wait for the U.S.P.S. to clear up massive mail backlogs.

We spoke with the local postal workers union leader. Daleo Freeman told us he couldn’t predict when the postal service will completely catch up on delays with your checks, prescriptions and packages.

But, he told us, the postal service hired more people than usual for help over the holidays. In Cleveland, many of those workers have been kept on the payroll.

“The ones that I represent, they’re keeping on 60 to 80 for the rest of the year,” Freeman said. “We still have a lot of work to do. We’ve been meeting with management almost daily to get their plan on how they’re going to continue to process the mail, and get it out as soon as possible.”

A spokesperson did use a general statement blaming the backlog on a record number of packages over the holidays and COVID-19 taking workers off the job. The statement also pointed out sorting equipment can handle thousands of packages an hour.

But, since last summer, we’ve reported on hard questions about equipment taken out of service. Even days ago, we saw trailers full of mail still sitting outside a facility in Akron.

  1. It’s a sewer, plain and simple. The overriding assumption when you read any of these articles is that the place can be fixed; it cannot. It’s over. It’s gonna lose billions every year forever. Denounced claims he has a plan. Let’s see it Louis because you can’t cut your way out of this mess, it’s already been done. The service can’t even afford replacements for the LLV’S. What he can and will do is go after employee benefits. That’s a winner, go after those that actually come to work and do the work. Try delivering a route from home.

  2. Management doesn’t answer the phone .They can’t hear it because they turned the ringer off. They are lazy very lazy they only care about # of hours they use and it better be lower then last year if they want their bonus. That is all they care about! The mail, customers ,and employees are a big bother to them. What is funny though is the flyers are still being delivered. It never fails to deliver them even though we do it for pennies and never ever count or weight them to charge the correct postage. To hell with the disabled vet and his V.A. medicine got to get the 80 billion $$ mass mail marketers 10 cent flyer out. They make 180 billion $ a year the P.O. looses hundreds of million a year delivering them.It starts with management and only them. The only people that do care are the people that actually touch the mail your carrier and the clerks at the counter!

  4. The Management is more concerned with the carriers making sure every scan is made. Don’t work to take care of the mail that is delayed. Don’t avoid any standup talks.

    • Nice to see that you are thinking about how it really is. The local level
is where the real work gets done. When local management have no
common sense, and unions are just going along for the ride. a child could
be the Postmaster General, and it wouldn’t be any worse off. Leadership
leads from the bottom up, not trickle down economics from the top
down. That is why they say all politics is always local.
