Congress will not vote on Senator Coburn’s Amendment To CR Striking Language for 6-day Delivery

Corker Strongly Disappointed Congress May Miss Opportunity to Give Flexibility to Postal Service & Save Taxpayer Money

WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Bob Corker, R-Tenn., expressed strong disappointment that Congress will not vote on Senator Coburn’s amendment that would free the Postal Service to make one change it believes is necessary to reduce costs. Specifically, Senate Amendment 68, which Corker has cosponsored, would strike language in the CR that could mandate six-day delivery. The Postal Service estimates it would save roughly $2 billion a year by moving to five-day delivery for some postal products.

“This is typical Washington—wanting to have our cake and eat it, too. We all know that we need to allow the Postal Service the flexibility to make necessary reforms and cut costs so it can operate more efficiently and effectively, and yet Congress continues to stand in the way. This is a missed opportunity to enable the Postal Service to enact reforms it sees are necessary in order to reduce risk for taxpayers.”

Senator Coburn Attaches Amendment to Bill Striking Requirement for 6-Day Delivery

Congress drags its feet on halting Saturday mail delivery – The Washington Post.

The Republican-dominated House of Representatives has adopted a bill to fund the government for the rest of fiscal year 2013 that includes language historically interpreted to require six-day mail delivery. As this page went to press, the Democratic-majority Senate appeared poised to do the same, without even voting on an amendment from Sens. Bob Corker (R-Tenn.) and Tom Coburn (R-Okla.) that would have let the USPS stop Saturday delivery. This, despite the fact that the Postal Service is losing $25 million per day and has maxed out its $15 billion line of credit with the U.S. Treasury.

  1. Hiya, I was reading one more thing about this on an additional blog. Interesting. Your perspective on it is diametrically contradicted from what I read earlier. I’m nevertheless pondering with the opposite elements of view, but I’m leaning to a very good extent toward yours. And irrespective, that’s what is so perfect about current democracy and also the marketplace of ideas online.

  2. All the people who wish for 5 day need to find a different job because this one requires 6 day delivery. The fact is if the USPS had all the money returned to it from it’s overpayments into the CSRF and FERS we would not be looking at this attempt by these greedy, money hungry, power tripping idiots that are trying to force privatization on the totally unsuspecting public. If you think about it, the PAEA was designed to bring about this time in the Postal Service, this is no conspiracy theory, just a thinking persons view of the situation.

  3. That is a lie it would not save the tax payers any money. because the post office dose not get any money from any one. Any profit that they make Washington take it because they are a not profit and can not make money.

  4. Oh come on if they used dois to do the math we would show a profit. We can make the figures say whatever we want in dois.

  5. oh, what BS ! If 5 day comes and we save 2 billion, all will be well with the world….what about the other 14 billion of loses a year? Do you think that they will go away by themselves. If 1 day =2 billion in saving, why not stop delivering all 6 days and save 12 billion (that way we are only 4 billion in the hole).

  6. Sounds like pack mule is the one that needs to read. Earlier proposal in 2011 to end Sat delivery would result in fewer customers and lost lost revenue and USPS estimated savings was over inflated according to PRC. USPS consultant to study 5 day delivery for USPS found there could be 7.7% loss in mail volume and $5 billion in lost revenue. Now Congress scolding USPS for failing to present data supporting estimated 2 bill in savings. Everyone has a built in BS alarm and most folks should be hearing it loud & clear. USPS feeding oh pack mule recycled donkey doo!

  7. I seriously hope PMG has the balls to go ahead with five day and tell congress to kiss our ass!!!

  8. We must continue to deliver six days a week as our competition wants a bigger slice of the pie. The savings is a fabrication made-up by the postmaster general donahue. The truth of the matter is they want to privatize everything in the post office and including allowing pitney bowes to process the mail as they are pushing this five day delivery because they know that the post office will weaken considerably and won’t be able stand with it. Ok we will do it if fedex and ups and pitney bowes goes to five day operation also.

  9. Aside from ending the pre funding requirement, which I don’t see happening soon, the union has’nt come up with ANY viable alternatives. All I ever hear is “things will go back to normal when volume picks up” That also is never gonna happen. I had 3 trays of DPS on MONDAY! Wake up! Something must be done or we will all be on the street!

  10. With a $15 Billion debt Republicans talk about gutting Postal Worker wages, pensions, health insurance beneftis, and pre-funding issues being so important, etc…
Then with a $17 Trillion debt why don’t these same Congress members talk about across the board gutting OF ALL FEDERAL EMPLOYEES to address the even bigger problem?

  11. Allow the PO to have more flexibility?Seriously, they can’t manage now,and some people want to give them even more free reign?Top management treats the PO like a cash cow.Do a search on what these people made the last few years while the PO was supposedly losing billions. And all the crafts were asked for concessions and pay freezes. You’ll see why they need to be watched even closer.

  12. We should not be paying taxes on fuel. Stop prefunding.
Cut management, wr are too top heavy

  13. Long live 6 day delivery. There are other ways to make the po better. Try using your heads.

  14. Stealth fighter is an idiot….Our government looses 1 trillion dollars a year…Back in the late 70s, when gas went to the incredible cost of $1.00 a gallon, the postal service said it cost 1million $ a YEAR for every penny increace in gas prices…..$3.75-$1.00=$2.75 x 1,000,000=$27.5 Million Dollars…….Not all thats a loss due to increases in stamp costs and increases in volumes….But now volumes are decreasing….We increased jobs during the peak, we decrease jobs as volumes decrease.
If nothing else can move the Senate to realize how much pollution can be eliminated by 5 day delivery…take some pressure off oil dependency….lower gas prices means more money for people to spend , creating more jobs, creating more taxes to collect, thus getting us out of this recession.

  15. The PO is not losing $25,000,000.00 per day! Even congress is aware that it’s a made up number from the unreasonable retiree health care prefunding. Apply simple common sense and you will figure out no company would be in business another day if they’ve been loosing $25,000,000.00 daily for years now.

  16. Once again, If these morons get their way, ( and I still doubt they will,) There won’t be a JOB for you to have Saturdays off from in 5 years. Did you NOT READ the REST of the article?

  17. Once again, if you have at least 5 years left you will not see 5 day delivery in your career. See u Saturday August 10, 2013 with my letters, flats, and packages.
