Congressman confirms, USPS denies closure of downtown Texas post office

The U.S. Postal Service is planning to shut down the Downtown Bryan Post Office due to declining revenues, according to U.S. Rep. Bill Flores, R-Bryan, though his offices were not made aware of a timeline.

bryanpoBut officials from Post Office Operations in Houston insist the office will remain open for now.

The future of the downtown office is in question after the Postal Service called for a meeting last week to discuss possible changes, but canceled it two days later.

A letter dated Tuesday from the manager of Post Office Operations in Houston set a meeting for Oct. 2 at the main post office in Bryan off William Joel Bryan Parkway near Texas 6, asking for residents to voice opinions on a possible change in services.

Dionne Montague, a spokeswoman for the U.S. Postal Service in Houston, said Thursday the meeting had been canceled and there are no plans to close the downtown office.

Montague said the letter was sent in error and should not have been distributed. She said she did not know how the error was made.

The supervisor asked to see the letter given to The Eagle, and once handed to him refused to give back the letter, despite being asked to do so by a reporter twice. He also refused to give his name and title for the record, though he was wearing a name tag that identified him as Mark Kasner. Other employees identified him as the supervisor

  1. Sorry, only authorized communications personnel are allowed to talk to the press and that doesnt include station managers; oh, and what letter? you didn’t keep a copy? what kind of reporters are you?

  2. Nothing unusual here. The USPS has made some unbelievable claims especially under the suicidal tutelage of Pat Donahoe, who has perjured himself to Congress, lied to members thereof concerning the potential closing of plants and has no issues with spreading disinformation anywhere that will throw a smoke screen around his real goals, which is destroying the unions, selling out to private interests and raking in who knows how much bribe money for his efforts.
Let us consider Hurricane Sandy which decimated the northeast a few autumns ago. One office in New Jersey reported that mandatory evacuations had been ordered, and district personnel told those employees to stay and work. This was illegal – the U.S.P.S. loves to think they are above the law, but the employees stayed, only to have to be rescued a short time later through the roof as the whole building went underwater. When local USPS spokespersons were asked about the order to stay and the deliberate breaking of the law, they said to this effect: “Safety is our number one concern for our employees and we always obey the law.” Uh, okay.
You will know when your local facility closes when it is boarded up. Up until that moment, everybody outside management will be kept guessing until the last possible minute. When will Congress clamp down on this outrage?

  3. Typical arrogant, incompetent, ignorant supervisor. Refusing to give the letter back as if that was the only letter in existence in the world. A Fortune 500 company run by sycophants and uneducated prostitutes. These managers will always think they’re above the law because there’s no accountability. Do my fellow Postal Workers know of ANY supervisor held accountable for anything?
