Congresswoman Barbara Lee Calls on Congress to Prevent Sale of Historic US Postal Buildings

Congresswoman Barbara Lee introduces bill to halt sale and consolidation of Historic US Postal facilitiesWashington, DC – Today, Congresswoman Barbara Lee introduced legislation to halt the sale and consolidation of historic US Postal Service facilities. The Moratorium on US Historic Postal Buildings Act would prevent USPS from selling any facility until all buildings listed or eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places are removed from the auction block.

“These historic post offices are an irreplaceable part of our nation’s history. They belong to the American people,” said Congresswoman Barbara Lee. “Historic post office buildings are an integral part of our cultural heritage and should not be used as a bargaining chip to resolve the Postal Service’s financial woes.”

“In my district, the Berkeley post office is cherished by the East Bay community,” Congresswoman Lee added. “I’m calling on Congress to stop these callous attempts to auction off our heritage. My bill would ensure that historic post offices across the country, including the Berkeley Post office, remain as a cornerstone of our community.”

  1. Republicans are anti-labor.. People of the U.S.A. have spoken. They voted for Republicans.
Take a look at McConnell he is against OBAMA CARE. Voters believed him but is STATE is all OBAMA CARE….

  2. Bed Time For Bonzo-Feinstein and her hubby,Dick Blum stand to make a billion off the sale of postal buildings alone, and that is not to mention all the other no-bid government contracts that went to them and you won’t hear a peep out of Mitch McConnell about it nor will he stop it because he himself is steering big government “consulting” contracts to his wife,Elaine Chao and himself and other Senators are using their office to line their pockets with riches. The corruption going on in the Senate is endless.

  3. Forget the historic ones what about the ones that are open now that they’re closing a lot of people are being shoved out of the post office forced retired just so they could cut paying their employees and get increased pay themselves.

  4. What have the democraps done for the Postal Service…You people blame the Republicans…O whats his face had total control and did not do ANYTHING so if the Republicans give the Postal service a bad deal..don’t blame them The bonehead in charge had his chance…but no amnesty was more important…and if you do your research on this clown he hates federal workers and yes I am a Postal service employee 2 8 years

  5. Amazing how these snakes crawl out from under their rocks when the issue finally affects their district. Where was the Congresswoman before the USPS put the Berkeley office on the selling block? My local Congressman, Bill Shuster Republican 9th district Pa., made it very clear to our local union that he supports the pre funding of the postal retirement, and privatization. The postal consolidations has affected his district with the downsizing of the P&DF, but at least our snake crawled from under his rock early, and didn’t show any “false” support when the downsizing happened. He is totally anti union, and wears it on his sleeve.

  6. Same random uprising from so few who want to protect their special interest. Where has the effort as a WHOLE been since the damage was done in 2006 when you idiots passed your lame duck session bill called the “2006 ACCOUNTABILITY & ENHANCEMENT ACT robbing the U.S.P.S of $75 Million!? This GREAT SERVICE TO THE AMERICAN PEOPLE has not only been robbed BLIND but now YOU Want to PRIVATIZE it…WHY? Get rid of your major cash cow…REALLY!? I will never understand a UNITED STATES CONGRESS with the lowest approval rating of ALL time doing what it is doing and why? When next year comes around (2016) Are you going to HELP THE USPS by re-enacting another 10 year version of the the same crap(that is if you don’t destroy us first!) or will someone have the balls to do something right like 1st reading what our FOREFATHERS WROTE about the POSTAL SERVICE BELONGING TO THE PEOPLE WHO HAVE POWER TO SAY HOW THINGS ARE DONE?! NO YOU ALL DON’T CARE ABOUT THE THOUSANDS OF MILITARY VETERANS & DISABLED WHO ARE EMPLOYED BY THE USPS! YOU ONLY CARE about keeping your individual political jobs alive until you quit, lose, or get beat so you can get your free ride into the sunset! YOU ALL MAKE ME SICK. The WORST part is that I supported a DEMOCRATIC PRESIDENT who I thought WOULD CARE about US & the UNIONS. NOT! There is no compromise and there is no effort for a LARGE SOLUTION TO PASS ANY TYPE OF BILL TO HELP THE GREATEST COURIER OF MAIL TO 100% OF THE AMERICAN PEOPLE! I CAN ONLY HOPE & PRAY YOU ALL WAKE UP BEFORE IT’S TOO LATE(USPS TOO CRIPPLED OR JUST LEFT TO BECOME NONFUNCTIONAL). THE ONLY MAN WHO UNDERSTANDS THE USPS AND MOST OF WHAT IS THE SOLUTION TO MOST OF OUR PROBLEMS IS MR. BERNIE SANDERS! (A LIBERAL from VERMONT!) I VOTE BERNIE SANDERS FOR PRESIDENT & ED SHULTZ (ED SHOW) FOR VICE PRESIDENT! 28 YEARS in the USPS & I’ve never seen anything like what is happening now-days. I hope I make it to retirement before OUR USPS & Government non-action destroys A TRULY GREAT SERVICE!!!

    • The amount of money the P.O. has to hand over is $75 billion not million. The P.O. made 2 payments of $5.7 billion each for the first 2 years of PAEA.

  7. oh oh I see a cat fight with sen diane feinstein and hubby blum (oy vey) over their no bid contract to sell postal buildings. feinstein worth 70 million from only working in civil service jobs……….oh no another rich 1% democrap that liz powell never mentions.

  8. It’s a good start, but Congress needs to pass a moratorium on the further unnecessary closures of post offices and mail processing plants, but with the Republicans controlling both houses and wanting a government agency that that is self supporting to bite the dust and refuses to confirm the BOG nominees,it is doubtful that even Rep.Lee’s bill has any chance of reaching Obama’s desk.

  9. Just another crazy liberal. Why not just abandon those buildings and let her illegal and druggie constituents move in and destroy them?

  10. If the congresswoman wants to save these building then she should write a bill that will protect them, that’s her job. This, however, will be at TAXPAYERS expense not USPS’s. Let the Postal Service run like the business that it is and not the government agency that so many in both houses of congress think it still is. The less waste any self supporting business has the better chance for a better paycheck for it’s employees.
