Connecting History: March on Washington stamp goes social

Social media will help bring an important chapter in history to life when the Postal Service issues the 50th anniversary of the 1963 March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom commemorative Forever stamp.

Through Aug. 23, anyone on Facebook and Twitter is invited to add a photo to the virtual March on Washington Stamp Mosaic on the Postal Service’s Facebook page.

Individual photos become pixels in the mosaic, as each unveils a piece of the stamp artwork.

“We want to give people a chance to participate in the unveiling of the historic artwork, given that the participation of hundreds of thousands of people was one reason that the March on Washington was so significant 50 years ago,” said Chief Marketing Officer Nagisa Manabe.

To participate, those interested can click the “Add me” tab. Every time a person participates, his or her Facebook or Twitter profile photo is added to the mosaic.

The final pixel of the stamp will be simultaneously revealed digitally on Facebook and on-site during the first-day-of-issue ceremony in Washington, DC, Aug. 23.

Employees are invited to take part in accordance with the USPS social media policy. Those who need access to social media for work purposes should request it through eAccess, with manager’s approval. Those who do not have a postal computer can visit the USPS Facebook page from a home computer or smart device.
