Customers in Sandy-stricken areas appreciate USPS diligence

Some newspapers in the New York City area, including the Staten Island Advance, are well known for over-the-top headlines. But “My mail carrier is a superhero” — the banner that appeared on page one of the Nov. 19 Advance — accurately reflects the views of storm-struck residents in the nation’s largest metropolitan area.

Customer response conducted in the days following Hurricane Sandy indicates the Postal Service stood its ground in the wake of the storm. Most storm-related calls to the USPS Customer Care Center reported no deliveries — understandable given the conditions. But perceptions of the USPS brand during this critical time remained favorable. Many callers expressed appreciation to the Postal Service for its continued service in extreme conditions.

USPS-related social media posts during and immediately following the storm also were positive. Social media sentiment on USPS was 47 percent positive. Only 8 percent was negative.

Many posts praised postal workers who braved the storm. “Wow,” one satisfied customer posted. “Through rain and sleet and even Frankenstorm, the postal carrier just made it to our door. Amazing!”

Peter Spencer, New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s Staten Island storm liaison, seemed to echo the favorable sentiment when he told the Advance, “I think they’re showing that they’re still an extremely efficient and reliable service, and people appreciate that — especially in these times.”
