Election Day is Nov. 4, so Postal Service employees should be on the lookout for election-related mail to ensure it gets timely processing.
States are increasingly using the mail during the election process. Oregon, Washington and Colorado conduct all elections by mail, and 19 other states also have vote-by-mail programs.
There are two types of election-related mail: Election Mail, which includes ballot materials, voter registration cards, absentee applications and polling place notifications; and Political Campaign Mail, which includes all registered material promoting political candidates, referenda or campaigns.
In 2012, USPS processed and delivered an estimated 207 million pieces of Election Mail and 2.8 billion pieces of Political Campaign Mail
