Drunk driver critically injured in crash with caravan of USPS trucks

From the La Porte County Sheriff’s Office

4/2/16  La Porte, Indiana The La Porte County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a serious injury, multi-vehicle crash that occurred early Saturday morning on US 20 just west of Fail Road. At 5:03 AM Sheriff’s Deputies were alerted to a reckless driving vehicle traveling east on US 20 from US 35. The vehicle had reportedly disregarding the traffic light at US 20 and US 35. A short time later Sheriff’s Deputies were dispatched to a multi-vehicle crash on US 20 west of Fail Road.

Upon arrival at the crash deputies noted that one of the vehicles involved in the crash matched the description of the previously reported reckless driving vehicle. The driver of that car, a black 2007 Nissan Maxima, was identified as 33-year-old Gary Moormann from Rolling Prairie, Indiana. Moorman’s vehicle was utterly destroyed in the crash and he had to be extricated from the vehicle by firefighters. Moorman was flown by Med Flight to South Bend Memorial with critical injuries. A blood test determined that Moorman’s blood alcohol level to be .27% which is substantially higher than the Indiana state limit of .08%.

The Nissan Maxima collided with a westbound United States Postal Service truck that was being delivered and was one of seven that was traveling in a caravan westbound on US 20. A second postal vehicle was also involved and forced off of the roadway and into a field. A third postal truck was also struck and damaged. None of the USPS vehicles were carrying mail. The drivers of the postal trucks were not transported to the hospital however did have minor complaints of pain. (names and info not available at time of release )

A second crash occurred at the scene as a direct result of the first crash. Marc Miller, age 23 of Griffith, Indiana was traveling east on US 20 in a red 2006 Chevrolet Equinox when he was passed by the Nissan Maxima just prior to the collision with the USPS vehicle. As the two vehicles collided, Marc Miller took evasive action to avoid the crash, ran off of the south side of US 20 and struck a utility police. Marc Miller nor his passenger were injured; Sheriff’s Deputy Justin Phillips, who investigated both crashes, credited the wearing of seatbelts which prevented any injuries in the second crash.

The Sheriff’s Fatal Alcohol Crash Team responded to the scene and will be reconstructing the crash. Alcohol and reckless driving are listed as a cause of the crash which remains under investigation. US 20 was closed from SR 39 to SR 2 in La Porte County from the time of the crash until approximately 9:45 AM (CST). The Sheriff’s Office was assisted in the crash by La Porte County Emergency Medical Service, Kankakee and Springfield Township Fire Departments, La Porte County Haz-Mat Team and the Indiana Department of Transportation
