East St. Louis postal supervisor sentenced to probation for stealing mail

crimeAn East St Louis, Illinois USPS supervisor was sentenced on Friday in federal court for stealing mail.

Jane Johanna Emily, also known as Jane Moeller, of St. Louis, was sentenced to 5 years on each count, with the first 6 months to be served on home detention with electronic monitoring, all terms to run concurrent (she must pay the costs) . Postal inspectors caught the USPS supervisor while working at the East St. Louis Post Office in April 2013.

An investigation began after a customer contacted the post office in March 2013 regarding a missing Express mail package that had been seen by other postal employees in her office. Emily was caught a month later during an undercover investigation conducted by special agents of the U.S. Postal Service, Office of Inspector General.

During the investigation, agents sent a package to the East St. Louis Post Office. Emily, who did not deliver packages, removed the package and left the post office. Agents then stopped Emily, who told investigators that she was actually “working for postal inspectors to uncover suspicious packages.” The undercover agents knew this was false.

Emily was also ordered to undergo health therapy, drug and alcohol treatment, which she must pay for after reports by co-workers that she “possessed numerous pills and offered pills to another, and the suspicion that she was stealing parcels containing illegal drugs.”
