Editorial: Time to Sun Down USPS Worker Apathy

Generation X Y&Z must tweet this message. Baby Boomers should remind the disillusioned that every vote counts for community livelihood. Senior citizens have got to share experiences of early day issues to reiterate why today’s society is better because of the village. Across generations mutual cooperation is the technique to discuss the impact of apathy on the masses. Nonparticipation hurts everyone because decision-makers will decide the outcome of the representative sample and the listless will be left echoing that popular phrase “It is what it is.” But, it ain’t what it could have been.

Does apathy have anything to do with culture, convenience, or politics? Regardless, here’s a bit of cabin advice. In the event of a loss of peer pressure quickly put the oxygen mask on the apathetic before it spreads a lack of emotion and interest onto others. Once the surrounding environment begins to make individuals feel indifferent the failure of focus will rear its ugly head disguised as laziness, intentional exclusion, and a defeatist attitude through ridiculous excuses. Only the mentally fatigued refuse to vote for any kind of change, deny opportunities to participate in structured events and assessments devised to extract popular thinking. The closer the unresponsive get to a right to be heard through democratic processes the more they remain detached from contributing an independent reply. Seniority and security only come from protecting what is already achieved by those who have gone before, and being spoiled by a boat load of benefits means someone forgot.

While the weary slowly slip into a sedated unconsciousness from the nosebleed section those on the field of play are left contending with management, union, social, economic, and political portions placed in the path to the goal line. Even as the lifeless remain out of bounds their livelihood is slowly dissected too. They hear others talking about the issues and their lack of formal opinion further agitate the mentally distressed negotiating results. When work hours and assignments are restructured for needs of service, and financial spreadsheets along with personal health concerns become stressors, the indolent become sick and tired but not tired of being sick.

The slothful are no longer concerned, period! They refuse to read, are too lazy to write, and anytime an idea is expressed become argumentative and defensive. Idle, detached, and unfocused about work conditions the droopy give up choice rights and settle for status quo as non-believers, clock watchers concerned with breaks, vacations, going home, and pumping up their own reputation among the empathizers until it’s time to get in the street when there’s a sudden brain and mandible freeze.

Quotes like “Be the change you expect in the world,” “Ask not what the organization can do for you, ask what can you do for your organization,” “If you don’t stand for something you will fall for anything,” and “See something, say something” have absolutely no meaning to the limp. Inaction represents a sign of ignorance and unwillingness to educate one another to collectively organize and produce the greatest good for the greatest number in a democratic way of life.

Yield to the warm solar rays of the gentle persons that are part of an attitude willing to organize and stand together nonviolently, and proactively to improve the conditions of employment. Help each other by getting occupied for the sake of future generations. When a problem exists time to develop the other side of the equation through the question, what are the masses going to communally do to solve it? The antipathetic are a majority of those who participate and once the decision is made by them, for them, it’s rooted until the next opportunity. Stand up tall so no one will be able to ride an apathetic backside. Teton Dakota Indian chief Sitting Bull said it best “As individual fingers we can easily be broken, but all together we make a mighty fist.”

Ronald Williams, Jr.

  1. Hey Postal Management, good ideas do come from those of us who aren’t on the EAS pay schedule! If nothing changes….then NOTHING CHANGES!!!

And for us workers, just remember these 2 sayings:

“Take ownership of your future…take ownership of your job”

    and

    “If you always do
    what you always did
    you will always get
    what you always got.”

  2. The APWU sold out the rank and file for an increase in members i.e. dues revenue. You wonder about the apathy. If they asked you who was on your side what would be your answer. The republicans? The democrats? The union? You have the rich stealing theirs. You have the poor getting freebees in exchange for votes. Yes. It is what it is.

  3. Sorry guys. You really missed the point. The message was aimed at the “Whoa is me” crowd who spend time wondering why someone else doesn’t do something for them, rather than doing something for themselves. The Union is not the national officers. The Union is the collective of all members. The vast majority of the members rely on the minority to protect them. When the majority doesn’t get what they want or when they loose a benefit, they blame it on the minority. They refuse to accept that most of their work-life misfortune is brought on by their own unwillingness to participate in the very process designed to allow them to help determine their own future.

  4. Me doth thinks Mr. Williams be a union stooge grappling with his sense of the end. Too bad he won’t be eligible for that goden parachute no one wants to talk about aka APWU Union Officer Only Retirement Fund Which Was Paid For by your Dues money but that you can’t access as a lowly lemming.

  5. This is a loud-sounding nothing. Looks like one of those reports from postal management about stuff like “assuring the dynamic parameters are exercised for maximum performance improvement”. Bunch of words strung together to sound more important than they are.

Management speak gibberish and gobbledy-goop. STFU.
