FedEx SmartPost investing $41 million to move NC facility- 462 out of 521 jobs will be part-time

This is the model that Issa and others would like to see happen to USPS-mostly part-time workers. City of Concord, NC also grants Fedex huge tax break.

CONCORD, N.C. – The announcement Thursday that FedEx SmartPost plans to move jobs from Charlotte to Concord includes the addition of a new 330,780-square-foot distribution center in the Phase III portion of the International Business Park in Concord.

SunCap Property Group LLC is building the $27 million facility for FedEx SmartPost, which has said it plans to employ 59 full-time employees and 462 part-time employees at the Concord location by 2019. The new facility will triple the size of the operation, which currently is located at 8910 Pioneer Ave., Charlotte

Concord City Council members also approved an 85 percent tax reduction for FedEx SmartPost. The proposed grant would be based on the total $41 million investment, which includes the $27 million facility and an additional $14 million in personal property that will be housed in the new facility. The value of the grant is about $500,000, based on the $41 million investment and the city’s 48 cents per $100 valuation tax rate.

 

SmartPost specializes in shipping low-weight packages to residential customers. By utilizing the U.S. Postal Service for final delivery, FedEx SmartPost reaches every U.S. address, including P.O. boxes and military APO, FPO and DPO destinations. Customers can also use FedEx SmartPost to ship to Alaska, Hawaii and all U.S. territories, according to the organization’s website.

  1. Susan ~~ where Lee I missed the mark is the US employee wanted the big wage and cheap goods. They made Walmart king and wonder why there are no jobs. No business, no politician sent the jobs offshore, the US consumer demanded it.

  2. All I can say about this is,somebody is going to make a LOT of money off this plan and it is NOT going to be the USPS.

  3. My buddy just told me an hour ago that a carrier was openly bragging about that he doesn’t deliver pre-sort or the weekly food ads/etc. He is part-time. Also, he told me that (this is in Evergreen Park, IL 60508) he hasn’t gotten any mail in 3 days, nor his neighbor, and he hasn’t gotten those weekly food ads in 3 weeks either. I asked him if he complained or called the USPS postmaster. He he will this week. Pathetic, this is really something when the part-timers just don’t care. It also shows us the mentality of today’s worker who hasn’t worked in a decent job, or ever. That is, NO INCENTIVE to work hard. Plus the break-up this last generation or so of our decent family structure. My friend has never lied to me, just so you know how I regard what he tells me. Now this carrier could have been BS’ing him, but I doubt it.

  4. 85% tax break?! Holy cow! That’s a lot of corporate welfare! Income redistribution is ok when the rich are the receipients.

  5. 59 full time workers, those are the management the rest are slaves, good luck with that.

  6. Let them. They will find out that part time workers don’t care. The USPS is having problems with their part time workers. Many are being caught throwing away mail. What do you expect? You pay them peanuts. Run them to death telling them to deliver more in less time which is impossible, so they take the short cut and throw away mail. You don’t think UPS or Fedex doesn’t have the same problems? Google it. Part time workers in a delivery service industry have no pride in their work. You get what you pay for.
