The member of Congress who wrote the 2006 law that has been widely blamed for the United States Postal Service’s financial crisis is defending that act but warning that lawmakers are unlikely to come quickly to the agency’s rescue.
Former House Committee on Government Reform chairman Tom Davis laid that forecast before a July 16 Pew Charitable Trust seminar on whether banking services should be offered by the USPS.
Now a lobbyist for the consulting firm of Deloitte LLP, Davis told the daylong meeting that the Postal Service “is still very savable” and could be quickly rescued by Congress.
But Davis also argued that the Postal Service is essentially powerless in Washington, D.C., and that most officials tend to ignore its calls for help.
“My judgment is until the postmaster general goes and starts making some tough decisions and Congress feels the pain for not acting, they’re not going to act.”
His talk offered a revealing look at how little clout the Postal Service has with a Congress that is wooed by countless mailing groups with political action committees.

funny how the VA is in the news for 6 weeks about corrupt govt mismgt and obammy gets a top shelf former retired executive from Procter & Gamble with a proven track record and an MBA from a first rate B school to take over……..on the other hand the PO has been losing billions since 2009 with Donablow (Potter left a mess) and obammy has not lifted one finger. I held my nose and voted for McShame as I knew this guy would be a loser…….I have been proven right. Obammy can hire the gang bangers invading over the southern border to deliver the mail for 2 bucks an hour……the new slaves and obammy is their slave master. cheap labor erodes pay of unskilled labor like postal workers…..not cardiovascular surgeons.
The pre-funding scam was a ruse to “rob peter and pay paul.” The pre-funding money is/was being used to pay FEMA victims from natural disasters in this country. It was the Republicans plan to have the working class pick up the tab for these disasters instead of the wealthy rich paying their fair share of taxes. We (the working class) pay enough for welfare cheats and illegal aliens on SSI so the Congress turned to the Post Office.
Congress still sees the Post Office as a cash cow and will milk them for every drop. The P.O. already has $50 billion in their pockets (from the 1st five years) and has stretch payments for the rest owed through their defaults for the next 40 years ($1 billion for the next 40). Congress is getting their cut! With the Putz Master General and his cronies making all these bad decisions, how come they haven’t showed any profit? We are in the last quarter and we are still in the RED. Any normal business would have 5 years to show a profit. Or they would go BANKRUPT! You would have to FIRE everyone from the top down and replace them with QUALIFIED EMPLOYEES to turn the P.O. around. Why is this not happening? Time to milk the cow!
As one Congressman stated, “the 100 billion surplus in the postal retirement funds were spent and the post office wasn’t going to get it back. The Unions were all for the pre-funding of future retiree’s health care. Stop being fooled Sucka and read: http://www.nalc.org/postal/reform/paea_2006.html
“The Bush administration had different ideas. It sought to complete the heist of the $27 billion and it tried to inflexibly earmark 100 percent of escrow savings for retiree health benefits.
In both cases, we prevailed over the White House. The new law sets out a 10-year schedule for using the escrow and military pension savings to dramatically reduce the Postal Service’s massive unfunded liability for retiree health insurance, while also providing some flexibility for other uses. In so doing, we secured more than $100 billion for the Postal Service in the decades to come and protected the interests of our current and future retirees, whose health benefits will be fully funded”.
The real reason for the prefunding scam is simple and I can’t believe it’s still not common knowledge.
THE POST OFFICE IS NOT ALLOWED TO MAKE MONEY.
So it was a good way to decrease the deficit.
Davis is as big a liar as Donawhore.
All we need to know about the integrity of this man is this : He is now a
LOBBYIST !!!’
Someone should tell ole dumbass Tom Davis he doesnt need to point out the obvious to anyone that’s still breathing about how Congress views the USPS; and oh, thanks for screwing the USPS back in 2006; I’m sure you got a big check when you quit to become a lobbyist; thanks for nothing;
Wonder what all that union copa money is getting them nowadays?
I’d be interested in hearing from him the Real reasons for the prefunding scam. Won’t hold my breath.
as we can all see and read when politicians get in the mix with the postal service it gets all screwed up, let them carry mail for a year or two in the inner city.
How could any one defend the idea of pre funding the cost of the Postal Service’s health care? It was made up only to destroy the Postal Service. Just stop the lies and admit the truth! You can thank ex president Forrest Gump and the rest of his Ratpublican friends. If the prefunding is such a great idea, extend the concept to all government agencies and all private corps!
WHAT ELSE IS NEW, GIRL’s….
The PMG has to go, period. The USPS doesn’t need him making decisions about anything because he is determined to ruin it for his handlers. It isn’t a question of whether Congress knows what’s going on – it’s a matter of their not giving a shit. Only pressure from the media and public at large will go toward more awareness of the mishandling and and treachery being committed by L’Infant Plaza. Like everything else that comes out of D.C., innocent people have to suffer one way or the other for it.
