Here’s How Hot It Is Inside a Mail Truck

7/19/18 It was a day of blistering heat in Southern California, and now the family of mail carrier Peggy Frank, 63, wants to know whether she was killed by extreme temperatures while on the job.

heattruck

Frank was found dead in her mail truck in Los Angeles earlier this month. The temperature outside was a record 117 degrees. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the employee’s family at this difficult time,” the U.S. Postal Service told Inside Edition. “The unfortunate incident involving this employee remains under investigation.”

  1. The hottest I’ve ever seen is 129.7 with a digital thermometer in my LLV . I took a picture of it and have a copy at my case . I threatened a “supervisor” after the “why did you go over time ” speech . I held it up and said, ” You do not want me to show this to OSHA, do you” ? She ran away without a word . The sad part is, if they made the windows by the mirrors swinging vent windows, it would fix the problem . I ‘m so glad I can see the end of my USPS career, it is going downhill so fast it isn’t funny .

    • but just think….the current po mismanagement will not last a week in a private business…….I am all in on that….it will be worth it to see them crawl away on their bellies like the snakes that they are.

  2. The Postal service doesn’t care how hot it becomes in their torture chambers called the LLV’s. They only want their trained circus animals back on time! drink water, stay cool however maintain schedule! The way the Postal clerk in Oakland, Ca . that fell from a machine is typical. The clerk laid on the floor for twenty minutes before the pud wacker management called EMS. A clerk told management about the injury, different bosses had to study the issue before they could decide to finally help. Management wouldn’t allow EMS on the property unless management or the Postal Police called in the accident. You think things are bad now, wait till the Postal Service is privatized. Just read up on Royal Mail. Don’t worry private business will be very generous!

  3. We tried to do the right thing and ordered cooling towels for our carriers. They cost about 6 bucks apiece. Management denied the request. Nice! ( and it hit here in FLA)

  4. you would think OSHA would be all over this…….like the NTSB does right after an airline crash before the engine’s go cold. what about that useless PO Inspector General…..out to an eternal lunch no doubt. Family has to approach a top tier accident law firm over this one……take these po criminals for every dime they have. in addition, lets put out the names of the Postmaster, Stupidvisors, and area Mismanagers of this post office station………drop a dime and call the local press with them. not even public shame would stop their criminal acts. Family should also contact their local district attorney to see if they can be, arrested, charged and tried for criminally negligent homicide. and why not!

    • 1. The USPS ignores any OSHA actions.

      2. The OIG is part of mgmt.

      3. In other words, both agencies are useless when it comes to dealing with the USPS.
Why do you think nothing ever changes ?

      4. Guess Rolando is still to busy being a USPS spokesman to bother addressing this issue.
Clown can’t even show some basic dignity and make a statement.

  5. Does it start – YES
    Does it move – YES
“Get out on time and be back on time, but take your time and be safe, now you’ve been told so if anything happens it’s your fault”

  6. That thermometer was not left in the LLV long enough. We’ve taken the temps of our trucks in our state in the same scorching heat and the back loading area was 135 degrees. Let me share a few anecdotes from my days as a city carrier (I retired about a year and a half ago, finally) and my experiences with heat. Maybe somebody close to this poor carrier’s family will read this and while it wouldn’t be admissible, it would perhaps remove any doubts about what the heat can do to you. And remember this: we think about extremes in weather, but in the cold, you can bundle up. Other than drinking like a thirsty fish, using sunscreen and a hat if you’re outside your LLV, and taking heat breaks, whether your supervisor wants you to or not, you’re at the mercy of the heat. And don’t overdo the alcohol, no matter how inviting that bottle of beer with the ice sliding down the outside of the bottle is. Alcohol dehydrates the body and can help create heatstroke and the hangover from Hell the next day. I gave up drinking 25 years ago, but I used to, and I remember. If you drink, after a beer, glass of wine or mixed drink, or shot, drink at least 8 ounces of water between your beverages. It will slow down the dehydration rate. Plus, you’ll feel fuller and maybe not as inclined to drink as much.
To the Frank family, my heartfelt sympathies. Here’s a few things I had to deal with:

On walking swings, the city would occasionally have to resurface streets, and here it’s asphalt. The streets are at least 140 degrees while the asphalt sets up and the yards have to be 120 degrees. The soles of your shoes even begin to melt.
The loading deck in the back of the LLV, even though they’re painted a light gray, are directly above the drive train and the surface gets so hot you can literally come away with serious burns on your hands if you aren’t very quick about getting your parcel or next tray of mail.
There is no ventilation in the back. Management will tell you there are vents, but they are about three by seven inches or so, with metal screens, and placed at the very top of the deck wall. They are worthless.
Carriers sweat so profusely the mail can and does get wet. They often have to go 45 minutes or longer between returns to the LLV and that jug of water, and that is too long. Some will try to carry smaller bottles, but they have to leave room for parcels, letters and flats in their satchels. The straps in the heat dig into your shoulder, ruin your shirt and can leave nasty rashes.
The steering wheels have all lost their coat of black paint, as in the summertime they heat up and flake off in your hands. They also can get very hot to the touch, and make driving hazardous.
Carriers very commonly get severe heatstrokes. Management only sees the numbers. They do not inspect in the heat or any adverse weather conditions for that matter. They are obsessed with performance bonuses and have, for the most part although there are some good ones out there who actually stick up for their carriers, given only lip service to the weather concerns and still push and bully CCA’s and anybody who allows them to to run like hell, carry extra swings and make it impossible for those who are intimidated to protect themselves.
The LLV’s are death traps. You can only roll the loading side window down a few inches or the mail flies all over the cab. Only hot air blows through the front vents. In winter when heaters fail, management dilly dallies and can take weeks or months to even consider doing something about it.
Also, if your personal carrier is a bit grumpy this time of year, cut ’em some slack. They are overworked, overheated, and usually feel pretty crappy every day until cooler weather eventually comes in.

    • yeah right…..IOD Muffin Megan Brennen only lasted 6 months as a letter carrier before she went out on IOD…….my guess she got a paper cut opening the dunkin donut box.mark my words she is no Gen Patton…..more the pee wee herman type! respect her…..in your dreams. Patton would be bee och slapping her all over europe! what a loser!

  7. THE POSTAL SERVICE WILL DO NOTHING ABOUT THE HEAT INSIDE THE TRUCK .THEY ONLY CARE ABOUT GET THERE NUMBERS … PUT THE POSTMASTER GENERAL IN THE TRUCK AND HER STAFF AND SEE HOW THEY FEEL …..

  8. How come NALC Thug Rolando is not investigating with a private LAPD retired detective agency…..afraid to spend a few shekels, may cut into the Las Vegas Convention Fund? WHAT A LOSER, WHAT A COMPANY UNION LAP DOG! tell the family double indemnity for a death on the job….these po mismanageing crooks will not tell them!

  9. EAS Postal Circus Mismanagers (210 Billion in liabilities and counting) in their air conditioned offices to family…..drop dead!
