BOISE • A Jerome woman who worked as postmaster relief at the Hansen post office was sentenced to three years’ probation for embezzling and stealing more than $7,000, the Idaho U.S. Attorney’s Office said Friday.

Mandi Burns, 26, took $7,156.07 from the U. S. Postal Service and $86.32 in merchandise from other victims, the office said. She pleaded guilty Aug. 13 and was sentenced Friday by visiting U.S. District Judge Dee V. Benson.

Burns was also sentenced to 100 hours of community service.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office said she worked there between July 2013 and November 2014 and used different schemes to take the money: keeping keeping cash from customers’ money orders, failing to report stamp stock sales, failing to report funds received for P.O. box rentals and placing orders in other people’s names for product from mail-order companies.

The case was investigated by the U.S. Postal Service Office of Inspector General with help from the Kimberly-Hansen Police Department.
