New Hampshire Letter Carrier Bill Brickley points out that while congressman Darrell Issa(R-CA) is applauding Canada Post’s plan to end door-to-door delivery within the next five years –he fails to mention Canada Post is planning on raising rates. Not only is Canada Post planning on raising rates but they are doing so by introducing a new tiered pricing structure for letters mailed within Canada.
According to Canada Post’s Five Point Action Plan:

Canada Post will introduce a new tiered pricing structure for Lettermail mailed within Canada, which will better reflect the cost of serving various customer segments. Under these changes, the majority of Canadians, because they buy stamps in booklets or coils, will pay $0.85 per stamp, with discounts for customers that use the mail most. The minority of consumers who purchase stamps one at a time, which represents an estimated 2 per cent of stamp purchases, will pay $1 per stamp. The average Canadian household purchases fewer than 2 stamps per month. These stamp price changes will take effect March 31, 2014.1
But not only will the price increase by 35% (63¢ to 85¢, 59% -63¢ to $1.00, if you buy just one stamp), but all ‘Permanent’ (P) rate stamps have been removed from sale at Post Offices (The “P” stamps are the equivalent of USPS forever stamps). According to news reports, Canada Post Offices were told by e-mail to remove all ‘P’ stamps from sale and sell only those with the 63¢ value on them.. If any Canada Post Office is caught selling the ‘P’ stamp they would face repercussions.
Canada Post representatives confirmed to Linn’s Stamp News that “the permanent stamps have been taken off sale, adding that most will return after March 31, 2014. Stamps for letter mail addressed to the United States or overseas will also go up in price under the new plan. Specific prices for these issues were not revealed, but “will typically fall in line with the new established pricing levels.”

Congressman Darrell Issa continues to astound informed observers of the Postal Service with his misguided comments. Mr Issa “applauded” Canada Post for planning to” phase out expensive to the door delivery “of mail over five years. He seemed to have no problem equating the US Postal Service with Canada Post. Not taking into consideration that Canada Post lost over a hundred million dollars this year delivering mail while the US Postal Service had an operational profit of $600 million.
Mr Issa also seemed to neglect to mention the fact that Canada Post was raising rates from 63 cents to 85 cents for letter mail. Imagine his reaction if the USPS wanted to raise rates by over 30%. Most likely his Government Oversight Committee would hold special hearings around the clock.
Also this “modernization” enabled Canada to become the first G7 country to eliminate home delivery of mail. Being a public servant you would expect Mr Issa to value service to the public not be “applauding” dramatic regression of services.
Maillady is correct, Issa is a brilliant businessman. He looked at Ronald Regans policy of selling Automatic Weapons and drugs to our ghetto’s, and expanded on it. He realized drug dealers have so much extra cash, they need loud stereo systems and car alarms that can talk. Some of your statement is straight up bullshit. American is a big place, not just big city’s, where you like to forget not everyone has internet or cell phones.
A lot can’t afford these things any more, you an dip shit only look at the business making money side and not the service side to the American public, whom always take a back seat in your plans.
Single coin stamp machines in lobby’s gone, post offices gone, reduced hours, bad window service, delays in mail due to plants closer, is your new way and it’s clear Congress is another BIG BIG reason the postal service is going broke! Repeal the 2006 law an give the postal service more time to fund future retires.
Use cash outs to employees whom can take advantage of them to reduce the work force, other ideas come to mind.

Issa also forgets Canada Post has had 5 day delivery for 30 years, no retiree health care pre funding because of single payer health care system. Owns Purolator, an overnight delivery company that competes with Fedex and UPS in Canada, and partners with UPS for international deliveries. Canada Post still can’t make a profit. Seems like Issa has been hanging with Rob Ford and smoking his crack pipe.
ISSA UNDERSTANDS THE REALITIES OF ECONOMICS FOR A SUCESSFUL BUSINESS. USPS days of operating as a public service is history, Operations must be cost effective as revenue is not being generated to cover cost of present
mode of service. Balance sheet is negative in all areas except parcel and shipping. ON line shopping market is increasing and will continue to do so. USPS needs to increase delivery options with UPS and FED X in the areas they presently have working agreements. USPS is no longer the means of communications for business and individuals as advances in instant messaging has eliminated this primitive 1900s method. The demand for parcel delivery will increase and USPS should concentrate efforts to gain market share.
Issa should be director of operations for USPS in order to
eliminate past cost bearing ineffective operation methods.
