(LA AP) The coroner’s office says a Los Angeles mail carrier found dead inside her postal truck amid scorching temperatures died primarily from overheating.
Temperatures reached 117 degrees (47 Celsius) during the week in July that Peggy Frank died in the Woodland Hills neighborhood.
The Orange County Register reports Monday that the 63-year-old died of hyperthermia, or abnormally high body temperature. Investigators say she had pre-existing health conditions including obesity and heart disease.
Frank had worked for the United States Postal Service for 28 years.
The USPS said in July that its employees undergo required training about working during extreme weather.

Get FMLA, burn sick leave and relax.
So not one of these stupid azz Carriers ever heard of a Form 1767 ?
I carried mail 20 years ago and it seems that things have not gotten better. The USPS is a terrible employer to work for as a mail carrier (I switched to maintenance after 13 years and it was MUCH better!), the worst job I ever had nor can imagine. The public thinks it’s a walk in the park, they need to walk a route in the cold of winter or the heat of summer. How a company can provide vehicles to their employees without air conditioning in this day and age is beyond me!
if it is too hot call in FMLA….note the days high temp on the 3971……..tell them IOD meghan brennen told you to take it easy. easy peasy, even Rolando could do it!
They don’t and never have cared one mouse dropping about their employees and I ve been around over 30 years what they’re doing now is just covering their asses
I bet you think that you have one of the lowest opinions of PU mgt. Ha! I bet my opinion of them is lower than whale crap!
The carriers are given safety talks and told to take water breaks, while they are told to be back on time. How come the stupidvisors have the pleasure of air conditioning while the servants must drive around in a thirty year old low mileage torture chamber? If the carrier had taken her breaks ahd came back late, she would have had a trip to the office!
This is another reason that Fred Rolando and all incumbents should be voted out this year. Go David Noble and the clean sweep.
Agree 100%. Rolando didn’t even have the decency to issue a statement.
To busy shoving his nose up mgmt. rears.
Not to worry; as usual, no one in mgmt. will be held accountable. This carrier was stationary for THREE hours; guess the stupor visor was to busy stuffing donuts in their yam to notice via gps, eh ?
More criminal activity by mgmt. that goes unpunished.
I’m a CCA who has not had a video or rarely get safety talks, properly trained on what to do in situations like this. It is sad
They’re now covering their butts by issuing service talks and messages through the scanners. I always try to get to a cool place every few hours of work, but there are carriers who are no so furtunate as it gets hot even in the shade in those tin cans.
Like how the “investigators” not the coroner said she had other health related issues? Those were probably the postal inspectors. As a postal employee, I knew that was coming. Heat alone effects the heart and body. She worked there for 28 years. That’s 28 summers of heat taking it’s toll on the body. In the office I work at, where it regularly reaches over 100 degrees in the summer, we didn’t have one single heat related safety stand up. Not even after her death. And this isn’t even the first heat related death of a postal employee. It wasn’t until I sent an OSHA link to both Postmaster and Supervisor that we had one. And our in house Safety Captain is an absolute joke to say the least. And… this summer a customer donated two cases of water for the carriers but the supervisor hid them and drank most of them himself. What company. I love what I do but how the PO treats their employees should be a crime. If the PO cared for themselves or its employees they should allow the allotted amount of time for stretching to reduce workplace injuries and workman comp claims, provide us with AC’s and frozen water when it’s over 80 degrees (temperature comes from OSHA) and masks for dust storms and fires and gloves because you know we’re touching other people’s spit and blood from papercuts and the ink on magazines/ads/ political is most likely toxic. The take away from this isn’t necessarilly to take care of yourself but to push for better working conditions for all thusly making the PO a model place to work. And shouldn’t it be? It’s the 5th largest employer in the nation
Thank you for efforts, This side of performing magic . Seeing would be believing that
anything is done to correct this sad mess!.
Yeah, they say,’ stay hydrated, take breaks’… just make sure you hurry up and make 1800 hrs! Management doesn’t care about carriers. ‘ Just get em off the clock!’
Why is it necessary to state that she had “preexisting medical conditions.” Any person with a health condition “or not”, that is working in extreme temperatures could have been killed in that type of heat. The information that she was obese is private medical information. (Can’t tell by looking at her picture). Also, if all the post office is going to do is give stand up talks and send texts to its employees to fix this, it is clearly not enough! We still get chewed out when we are over a few clicks. Also, these LLV are BURNING up on a weekly basis. Do something now! Not after something bad happens on a larger scale. The family should check into this report on her being obese and having heart disease. (PRIVATE INFO)
I am totally pissed!
28 years to die on the job sucks.
TP to her family.
Sadly the Post Office doesn’t care.
We have to start taking more time each day on your
routes.
When they try to write you up, say I needed to stop
I felt sick.
They only way to fight back is to hit them in the wallet.
Why won’t postal officials take a 5hour tour with the carriers? What’s wrong with air conditioned trucks? I am willing to bet that if these postal officials had to deliver mail in extreme heat, they would be air in trucks.Human life is more important than a few hundred dollars for air.
Lock up the officials who push carriers to their death under in human conditions.
Lock her up!!!
My friend is a mail carrier in San Bernadino county. Her first day on the job was so hot that the mail truck beside hers spontaneously combusted and burned to the ground. Total insanity
right after this broke in the news media….we all of a sudden had service talks up the wazo about heat -related issues……….IOD muffin megan brennen covering her butt was the general consensus. the poor women’s brain cooked. her postmaster and stupidvisor should be charged with manslaughter. and why not?
We got service talks a lot this summer after this happened and we are still getting them. We also had a 30 minute video about two weeks after this on how to hydrate ourselves on hot days. That is the extent of our training. They say take frequent breaks as needed in a shaded area but if you work over there is a problem. We are still getting messages daily on scanners about heat.
If they put A/C in the vehicles street time would go up and we all know that’s a No No! All they need to do is appear like they care, when we all know they dont!
When is the post office going to do something about this??? They have heaters but no air conditioning! Those mail trucks are metal cans, they heat up so much!!
