LAPD sergeant’s daughter gets to two years for killing postal worker in hit-and-run

A Gardena woman was sentenced today for killing a cyclist on El Segundo Boulevard last year and then fleeing the scene, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office announced.

Deputy District Attorney Philip Norris said Vanessa Marie Yanez, 24, was sentenced to two years in state prison in case YA088615.

She pleaded no contest to one count each of leaving the scene of an accident and perjury, both felonies, and misdemeanor vehicular manslaughter on Aug. 6.

Yanez hit Jesse Dotson Jr., 60, a postal worker, as he rode his bicycle on June 26, 2013, the prosecutor said. Dotson died 3 days later from the injuries suffered in the crash.

The defendant left the scene after the crash and reported her vehicle stolen the next day, the prosecutor added.

The case was investigated by the Gardena Police Department.

  1. She really should serve longer. Where was her empathic response to a human that she maimed? Could he have lived with proper concern at the time of the accident?
