Late-Night Mail Delivery Surprises Chevy Chase MD Residents

A number of Chevy Chase residents in the 20815 zip code reported mail delivery around 10 p.m. on Monday. The mail has apparently arrived later and later, some days around 6 p.m. or 7 p.m., in neighborhoods around Connecticut Avenue.

“Tonight takes the cake,” wrote one resident. “It’s 10pm and I just noticed flashing orange lights in front of our house — it’s the mail truck and the mail is just now being delivered!”

“Our wonderful mail carrier let us know that her route was changing as of last Friday (we are on Conn. ave) and that our section of the neighborhood was in ‘carrier limbo’ for at least the next few weeks,” wrote another. “We just got our mail too…”

USPS spokesperson Laura Dvorak said the 10 p.m. delivery was an anomaly and should not happen again. Adjustments are made to routes based on volume, service needs and other factors as necessary.

  1. Let’s see, your rt took 8.5 hrs on our inspection today.
That red light took 2 minutes of time, we’ll just deduct that.
You had to pee 3 times which took a total of 16 minutes inluding travel time to the Biffy, we’ll just deduct that too. Knocking on doors for package delivery and heavies, total of 25 minutes; deduct that. Answering customer requests for information, 10 minutes, deducted. Drinking water between splits to keep hydrated and safe, 4 minutes-deducted. 5 minute supervisor conversation, deducted. Hmmmm, well looky here, your route is under by over an hour. None of these “waste of time” items happens daily on your rt, so therefore we are adding an hour and a half onto it. Oh, and we will COR your station too because that will magically save another hour time. Ok then, let’s add 2.5 hrs to your rt.

Now, what seems to be the problem? Your rt is taking ten hours to complete after we just adjusted it to eight hrs. I think we’d better spend money on a supervisor to inspect your new rt several times in the next few months to see why it’s taking you so long. Perhaps if we spend extra thousands go dollars on someone to harass you, you will do better. Then in six months we will repeat this same process all over again! Good thing we have an endless pile of money here at the usps!
